what's the best way to call the US

What is the best way to call the US from the bahamas? I've heard charges can be 14.00/minute! Does anyone know of any prepaid phone cards that would work?

First, I'd call your cell phone carrier and see if your service works in the Bahamas. Some US carriers do work in the more northern caribbean islands. For a nominal roaming charge, you can make calls with your existing phone. Much better than $14 a minute! That seems crazy!

Both of my daughters are in Europe traveling- I bought both of them AT&T pre paid phone cards at Sam's Club before they left. They can be used however, overseas and the girls have called home MANY, MANY times. I bought them each 1200 domestic minute cards for $41.00 a piece. Depending on the country they are in this equates to much less minutes, but is still I think the best way to go. For instance calling from Austria uses 7 min for every minute you talk and from Rome it is 9 min for every min you talk. So in other words 1200 min calling from Austria equates to 200 minutes. Minutes can be added to by calling the 800 number on the back of the card at any time.
Hope this helps.

Your best bet would be to buy a Batelco
phone card upon arrival in the Bahamas..
they can be purchased at the airport,
or in gift shops, convenience stores,
etc. I've found that US purchased phone cards (inlcuding those identified
as "international") work sporadically in
the Bahamas.

We purchased a Batelco card last year
for $20 that we used for a week and still had $$ left on it.
