what island would you vote for as the friendliest people and safest?

I know you always have to be careful, but just curious since I have only been to two islands so far (Barbados and T&C) and would like to hear what others have to say about where they felt the safest and who had the friendliest people?

Anguilla or Nevis.

Out of all the places I have visited in the Caribbean, the following seemed entirely safe....safe walking around town and driving around the islands: Aruba, St Thomas/St John, St Kitts, Grand Cayman.
I have also been to Jamaica, Placencia, Belize, and Cozumel. I think these were also fairly safe, but I felt I needed to be a little more cautious. Of all these, I would rank Jamaica as least "safe". I did not feel safe renting a car there, or walking around outside of the resort (not to discount it's beauty or appeal...I still enjoyed my two visits!). Of course, as you already mentioned, you should always take care to secure your valuables and be travel smart....in any country. Hope that helps!

Of the islands we have been to, Grenada is at the top of our list for the friendliest and safest, followed very closely by Nevis.

We love St. Lucia for its beauty and because it seems to have avoided the common pitfalls of heavily touristed islands. The people are welcoming and genuinely friendly, and we have always felt very safe there.
As an aside, I would suggest that by extending yourself - learning about your host island and its people and customs before your trip and venturing outside the environs of your hotel or resort once there - you will be rewarded with amazing experiences and most probably new friends!

Grenada! The people are the friendliest I've ever met!

Peace, Greenie

Grenada for friendliest. Out Islands for safest (where else do you NOT get a key to your hotel room?)

Anguilla - friendliest people we have ever encountered. Best restaurants too. Not sure about the crime stats but it is a comparably undeveloped island and we always felt safe.

Saba
Grand Cayman
Staniel Cay, Bahamas

Grand Cayman We found the people very friendly and helpful. The island felt safe. Everyone seemed to walk the 7 mile beach back to their hotels after dinner at night. Bermuda is also an island we feel is safe and the people are friendly.

Of the Islands we've been to, I would say Grand Cayman and Aruba. We found the people very nice and no problem walking around even at night in the tourist areas. I also like Cozumel for friendly people and it felt safe to us.

Thank you all for your insights, and responses. This will help me in planning for my next vacation.

Anguilla!
Grand Cayamn was odd-every time I got into a taxi, the driver told me no one would molest me on their island. They were right, but I wasn't really expecting molestation

I will second Grand Cayman as well...more for safety than friendly people. Not that they weren't friendly but it didn't strike me there the way it did in Anguilla.

St. Lucia -extremely friendly and genuine people
Long Island, Bahamas -there isn't even a jail on this island if that tells you anything!
St. John
Virgin Gorda
(in no particular order)

I thought Barbados seemed the most unsafe and unfriendly, but this may have just been our experience. Oh, we had some issues with New Providence, Bahamas (aka Nassau) as well on a "girls" trip, particularly while we were out at a local night club.

J_R_Hartley Jun 14th, 2009 06:41 AM

safest has to be St Barts.

Hands down.

palmtree2384 Jun 14th, 2009 08:18 AM

I have to say St. Barts is one of the islands that I don't know much about? How are the beaches? Is there golf on or on a nearby island? crowded?

Jimmie Jun 15th, 2009 06:40 AM

Nevis.

SAnParis2 Jun 15th, 2009 08:43 AM

Montserrat, the people welcome what few visitors they get & I don't think there are even any locks on the doors. Everybody knows everybody, + it is most difficult to escape from an island...

St.Barts
St. Lucia
