Aruba!!!! Why? Because it's safe, good
weather (not in the hurricane belt),
super friendly people, great restaurants
and fun things to do! And great beaches!
The tradewinds are not THAT bad-- it is
strong enough to rustle your newspaper
and make reading it difficult. However,
the presence of these winds keep you
from getting so hot! I never got
sandblasted when we were there in July!

Virgin Gorda and St. Johns!!! "The Baths" at Virgin Gorda is a sight to behold.....gorgeous beach....and St. Johns....most of the island is a National Park, donated by the Rockefellar family....beaches are incredible!! The scenery on these two islands is spectacular!!

I've been to much of the Caribbean, but only one place has brought us back: Negril, Jamaica. And my choice for an all-around WONDERFUL guest experience on that extraordinary 7-mile beach is Charela Inn. The excellent, personable and professional staff makes this spot one in a million.

I have travelled to almost every island in the Caribbean and in the past 5 years have gone back to Cuba every year. I find it the safest (especially for a female)and very clean, friendly and cheap. The food is not the best but there are lots of good restuarants outside the resorts that serve very good (and cheap) food. I would reccommend Cuba especially Guardalavaca to anyone who wants a relaxing cheap and safe holiday.

Lee: My vote has got to be for Negril. I know that Jamaica gets a bad rap sometimes, but we always make it back here.

Runner-up: Grand Cayman. Not cheap, not real quiet, but a great place all the same.

Chow!

We liked Provo on Turks and Caicos. Pristine, quiet beaches with water that is the most beautiful shades of turquoise that you've ever seen.

This place has got to be the best in the Caribbean bar none.

Having traveled to a number of islands down there, I love St. Barts--it is clean, very pretty, has a wide variety of restaurants (great french and asian/fusion), no (or very very low) crime, people are nice--even though many like to criticize the French as all being rude, interesting shopping, easy to get to, close enough for day trips to neighboring islands, hotels range from very low key to extremely high end, or you can rent a house, beaches are clean- although not extremely big. A question I think you have to ask before you ask everyone what the best island in the caribbean is: what are you looking for? Honeymoon spot? Singles spot? lots of people and nightlife? Family trip? quiet and remote? Many of the islands that are mentioned in the responses are great, but some are really hard to get to, some have high crime rates--or the native population is not too friendly toward tourists, some have not a great selection of restaurants and/or accomodations, and some have been extremely damaged from hurricanes (especially St. Martin last year)that will take a while to 'come back'....

Ciboney Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The rooms are lovely, the grounds are lush and your every whim is met almost before you even ask. After a long trip you are met with a cool and refreshing drink and cool cloth to revive youself with and it only gets better. It is also a spa where there are many wonderful treatments to choose from. They call and remind you about making reservations for dinner, about activities outside the grounds, and other events so you don't even have to worry about your schedule. They do it for you. You truly feel very pampered and we became very lazy. Little shuttle buses drive you around the grounds and across a street to the beach so you don't even have to walk if you don't want to. One evening they had a wonderful craft show where many crafts people came to the property so we didn't have to deal with the bustle of the city. Afterward we enjoyed a huge and marvelous outside buffet. A true jewel. Check out their website for honeymoon information.

We have been to Aruba and loved it. Can anyone give any info on Curacao -- safety, restaurants, casinos, cleanliness, etc. Any info would be appreciated.

St. John is the best we have found in the Caribbean. While Aruba's beaches are lovely, Aruba is not a beautiful island; it is dry, arid and we found it to be quite windy.

People are great. Going this year 01/05/01 thru 02/04/01 hope to see you there Lee.

Guana is at the bottom of my list and was a huge disappointment. At the top is everywhere else in the Caribbean. I love the Caribbean and never tire of it. I especially love the BVI other than Guana. I sure wish we had our money back from that trip!

I can't believe all of the responses my question got! I don't get to visit this site very often and was surprised to see the posting was still around.

Thanks to all of you for your responses and it looks like we have some great ideas for our next Caribbean trip. Not sure when that will be as we are headed to Prague on 11/13 and probably Rome and Tuscany next fall. The Caribbean may have to wait, I'm afraid.

Happy travels, all!

Best: Aruba. Clean, safe, great beaches, restaurants, nightlife. Much to see and do. Scuba isn't the best, but it's good. Much cheaper than many other islands. Very friendly people.

Worst/Scariest: St. Martin/Maartin. Dirty, crowded, dangerous roads and people, ugly, lots of abandoned cars and mangy stray animals, mediocre restaurants (unless you love fatty French food). Beaches nothing special.

Best Scuba diving: Belize & Cozumel.
