What About Puerto Rico?

My husband and I did quite a bit of research on Puerto Rico before spending a month there in December.
We were aware and advised that we should not drive there unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Due to our lengthly visit there, we did rent a car. To put it quite simply, we don't believe that Puerto Ricans are given driving lessons and we were continually dodging horrible drivers everywhere. If we gave our five year old grandchild car keys and said, "drive to the local supermarket" she probably wouldn't do much worse than most of the drivers we saw there!!!
It was horrible.
Puerto Rico, on the other hand, is a beautiful island, but in visiting there, you will never gripe about paying taxes again. They don't appear to have trash pick up and the roads are not maintained well..pot holes that could ruin your car everywhere.

We often see great Puerto Rican tour adds on television and were indeed anxious to visit there. However, if Puerto Rico is to truly
appeal to repeat visitors there, they will need to improve in "cleaning up" this beautiful island.

We did stay at a wonderful Inn on the eastern side, called Fajardo Inn. The staff were wonderful and helpful and it was clean and convenient to town. We'd recommend it to anyone wishing to stay on the eastern side where you desire a quiet, relaxing atmosphere.

As for returning to Puerto Rico, we won't do it again, but it sure made us appreciate all the things here on the mainland of USA.
I don't know where you live. I've been to Puerto Rico several times. I live outside of Philadelphia. The drivers in Puerto Rico were not much worse than in any major city. When you are away from home, it is up to you to learn the ways of the culture you are visiting. We did just fine driving all around the island.
There are also poorly maintained roads all over the good old USA. In fact, I had a tire blow out two days ago because of a huge pothole.
There is no perfect place I know of, but Puerto Rico is certainly a place we will visit over and over again.

We just came back from our holiday and Puerto Rico. We had a totally different experience - no problems at all driving and we drove from San Juan to Ponce and back and to other places in between. The roads were fine. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the island. We saw little trash around - in fact, it seemed there were many crews out and about cleaning up roads and streets.
How about the people? We found everyone friendly, welcoming, polite - we would go back in a heartbeat!

WE love PR. It is one of only a handful of places we have visited, in a lifetime of travel, where we agree we could imagine living. We do not find it dirty, nor the drivers worse than anywhere except for the heavy traffic in San Juan. Roads are good, well marked, and the people, especially out in the country are outstandingly friendly, dignified and courteous. Have had the best meals in our travels in PR small cities, such as Haltillo on our last trip.
Just cannot identify with y0our experiences there! PR is an island with history, culture, natural beauty and not just a tourist trap like many Carib islands.

We were in PR for one night a few years ago, going on a caribbean cruise the next day departing from San Juan. It is beautiful, people friendly. The only drawback is, don't ever stay in the Comfort Inn in San Juan. Rooms were not very clean, toilets broken etc. Next time I would pay some more money for a nicer place. I am not picky, but this place did not feel very clean.
