Water Temperature in Dec/Jan

Hi
We are going to be doing some snorkeling in St John and Tortola Christmas and New Years week. We stay out for hours. I have a 13 yr old who is just muscle, no fat. He's wondering whether to bring his shorty wet suit. Is the water cool in the winter?
Also any advice on a good restaurant in St John for 25th anniversary dinner??

Thank you!
Joan

Simple answer - no he won't need his wet suit.
Check out usvi-on-line.com for customer reviews of St John restaurants as well as numerous suggestions on this post.
Have fun.

no the water isn't cool but some snorkelers who stay in the water for extended periods of time find that the light skin suits makes it more comfortable and protects you from the sun too.
We recommend and use a warm water suit for protection from sun and moon jelly fish if around. Otherwise buy a pair of dancer's tights and a long sleeve tee shirt -- a turtle neck one is better to protect the back of the neck from the sun. During Dec. and Jan. the surface water temperature should be between 79 and 81F according to NOAA records.
