warm place to go with two college age kids in January
 

We are planning a family vacation withr the kids over their vacation from college. They are 20 and 22 years old. We want a place where we can do some adventurous things as well as have a beautiful beach and relax. Any recommendations?

Look into Mexico's Riviera Maya or Costa Rica. Both offer beautiful beaches, zip lines, ruins, etc.

When I was in that age range travelling with my family we visited many islands but the ones that stood out to me were Grenada, Antigua and St.Kitts all great choices (ok back in the day St.Kitts was a little too slow...but it has livened up in all the right ways!!) They offered my parents a lovely relaxing and enjoyable vacation but for me a safe place to be young and not feel as though I were trapped alone on a beach with my parents every minute of the day....not that in retrospect it is such a horrible fate really!!

We are going back to our favorite haunt, Negril, Jamaica, in January with our two college age kids. Negril has one of the best beaches I've seen in the Caribbean ( almost seven miles of uninterrupted white powder sand) and there is tons to do- lots of restaurants, reggae/jazz clubs, water sports( snorkeling, diving) right along the beach and on the West End ( aka "The Cliffs"). There's also fishing- both deep sea and river. We usually stay at Coco La Palm, which is a low-rise hotel on the best part ( the middle) of Negril's famous beach, but you could also look next door at Idle Awhile, if you'd like something more upscale.

Tell me more about Coco La Palm? I'm curious. Looking for somewhere to take children-15 and 12. They have never been out of the country. Need a really cool beach place.

We take our college age kids to Grand Cayman every year in January (over J-term) and they love it. We stay on the east end at the Reef Resort or Morritt's Grand Resort. Both have onsite dive shops, excellent snorkeling, fun beach bars, deep sea fishing, pools, tennis, stingray city trips, etc. Last year we also went to 7MB for a day and went parasailing and swimming with the dolphins. Great fun! We used to stay on 7MB, but found it wasn't "island" enough for us, nice to visit for a day, but too congested to stay at for a week or two. Let me know if you have any questions on the east end or the resorts. For us, Grand Cayman is the safest and nicest place to go with high school and college age kids. Fun beach bars but no worries about a wild or unsafe night life.

Anguillagirl, We've been going to Negril for over 25 years, and for the last several have always stayed at Coco La Palm. It's a small resort on the best part of the beach.The staff is outstanding and can't do enough to make guests feel welcome. The rooms aren't fancy, although the upper floor jr. suites are spacious and pretty nice, but for the price and location it's hard to beat. You will find tons of young families there during school breaks, so your kids would have plenty of company. The resort has a wonderful beach bar/grill that serves very good lunches, although there's also an amazing jerk chicken stand "Best of the West" just across the street from the resort. Water sports are just out the front door, or you can check out any number of water sports vendors right along the beach.

We usually head to The West End for dinners at any number of small shacks/restaurants along the cliffs. Sunsets are beautiful there, and depending on the time of year, you might even see a school of dolphins! See you there?!
