WANTED: Luxurious, but not stuffy, resort. NOT in Jamaica...
For my mom's 60th birthday, she wants to take us all on a family vacation. each child is submitting a plan, and she'll pick the one she wants. want to help me with mine???
this is the crowd:
mom and dad, youthful and active 60 year olds
3 daughters:
oldest is 32, so is husband, they will have a child approx. 10-11 months old
middle (me) is 30, so is husband, will have a 7 month old
youngest is a mature 23, with her boyfriend.
we want to do this in April/May of 2002, not during the easter break time. it will be a 10 day trip. we'll be bringing the babies, so crazy nightlife isn't a priority.
what is a priority:
good service, nice rooms, nice beach and pool, some activities like boating, snorkeling, etc. an all inclusive would be great, but we want something luxurious. while i wouldn't say that money is no object, we're certainly not bargain hunting this time around.
if i could just transplant the Kona Village Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii to the caribbean, that would be my ideal place.
Any help?

Actually there are few true all inclusives, ones that include everything including booze and drinks, in the BVI but most do have a meal plan choice. Prospect Reef on Tortola is the exception but I would not call it "luxurious" since they don't even have a beach on site. Even Caneel or Little Dix is not all inclusive but do offer meal plans. Unfortunately many of the "luxury" a/i's that I know of are pretty steep *Jumby Bay and Curtain Bluff on Antigua since I am not a big fan of a/i, I really can't address the choices. I know that Beaches is a popular choice but has gotten some great and some not so great reviews but Provo in the TCI's is a lovely spot with a glorious beach!

Have you considered the Jalousie Hilton on St. Lucia? It seems to meet all of your requirements, and you can opt for an all-inclusive plan. The setting is absolutely gorgeous - very lush and tropical, between the two Pitons on the south side of the island. The accomodations are individual villas with plunge pools. The service is impeccable; if you do a search, you'll find tons of info on this forum. There are little sailboats to rent, and kayaks, diving and snorkeling, and you can arrange to take hikes and tours of the island - or you can just relax on the beach. The beach itself is beautiful; it has white sand imported from some other island which seemed strange to me at first, but it was really nice. This is probably the resort that would be most like Hawaii.

LUXURY= ST. BARTHS
By far the most upscale, luxurious island in the Carribean. Also expensive but during April/May it's much cheaper. We just got back from The Guanahani- the largest/ only resort on the island. They have 2 beaches- one on a lagoon and they have Windsurfing, Snorkling, kyyaking, sailing, etc. Also has 2 pools, 75 beautiful cottages/rooms, some with private pool. 2 FANTASTIC restaurants. The island is known for having by far the BEST cuisine in the carribean. I live in Manhattan and can honestly say that the food there was as good, if not better than some of the best restaurants here. I highly recommend it for your trip if you are looking for non-flashy elegance.

Luxury has different meanings for different people.
If you mean luxury in the $500 a night range for a one bedroom(+tax & service fees), then you might want to look at La Sammana in St. Martin. Great Hotel with a series of small villa type buildings (some with severla different rooms),a private beach, their own boats, and they run numerous diving/sailing/water ski trips.
They do have 3 and 4 bedroom villas with patio areas.
It is on the French side so t is close to some great restaurants.
FYI, prices across most of the Caribbean drop significantly once the Easter holiday is over. Same weather at 20% cheaper per night.

St Lucia Hyatt. New resort, clean, very nice beach, the friendliest staff, very very safe, secluded on a man made strip so no overcrowding, close to Castries for day trips & shopping, Marina close by for slow pace activities with lots of restuarants, calm waters, quaint 3 story resort, service unmatched and once again the friendliest staff.
