Does anyone know of an island with rooms with kitchenettes and within walking distance to restaurants and shopping?

Nope, sorry, there's not a single one that offers that.

:)

Actually, I'm just teasing you, as nearly every island offers that. What specific information are you looking for?

we stayed in sj in a condo that was within walking distance to the town so we never needed a car, it was really fun for the women to go shopping while the men stayed at the pool and we liked being able to cook in the condo.

Negril, Jamaica is a very walking-friendly town. 7 miles of beach and roads running parallel with tons of small restaurants, bars, shops, hotels...and in town two supermarkets.

Plenty of accomodations with kitchen(ette)s on beach or cliffs.

I agree about Jamaica. You never have to see a car or leave the beach and you can eat at a different restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner for weeks. Go to www.negril.com and click on "where to stay", decide if you want "cliffs" or "beach" and then look at profiles of accomodations. Some that I think have kitchenettes are Yellowbird, Negril Tree House, White Sands and I know there are many more.
