I can confirm that there are no snakes on Vieques. The Asian sugar cane plantation workers brought mongeese with them, and the mongeese ate all the snakes and many of the iguanas!
There was a large spider living on the porch of our house last March, but we established a detente based on mutual respect. Otherwise, you don't really SEE bugs, you just feel them biting at dusk.

eaf and mahobaygirl, thanks for keeping writing. I am trying to stay in Vieques just not at Hix House this time around. If I got there and there was a large spider living on my porch, I'd leave, so I think I made the right decision based on my idiot fears. I've been trying to get Evamer to get back to me in the remote hope they have something for my time frame. Anyone want to recommend another place? Here's my criteria. Secluded, clean, sealed with screens and a/c, great views, expensive okay, good pool, comparable in spirit to 29 Palms Inn in 29 Palms, Mojave Desert, California, if anyone knows that place. Thanks!

hangerhead, take a look at www.haciendatamarindo.com, which is a small B&B not far from Esperanza. It's within very easy walking distance of Inn on the Blue Horizon.
Most rooms have a/c and have screens on their windows. The pool is quite lovely, and I'm sure it's among the nicest on the island, but I don't think nice pools are a big priority on the island, if you know what I mean. By Vieques standards, it's got to be among the best on the island. We found the housekeeping standards to be quite high, and there are lovely views down to the sea from two sides of the building.
Room rates include breakfast, which is quite good. You can order off a set menu or have the daily special. They also offer a nice honor bar where you can help yourself to whatever libations you're in need of. My husband, his daughter, her daughter, and I all loved the HacTam.
