Vieques Bio Bay Tour Advice
We'll be visiting Vieques in Feb and doing a bio bay tour while there. Any advice re: kayak vs electric pontoon or which operator to use or not use. Any help is appreciated.

We went on the Island Adventures pontoon boat, not the kayaks, and it was great! They drive around so you you can see the fish make glowing trails in the water, then stop so you can get off and swim in the water. I'm sure the kayaks would also be really cool, but we were concerned whether our 10 year old could manage it. Have a great time!

I too have used Island Adventures and found them to be great.

I recommend Island Adventures. Ideally you want a dark overcast night for the full effect. With the pontoon boat you can swim under the pontoons where it is dark. I can't imagine getting out of and into a kayak to swim.

I think Vieques sounds so intriguing. My husband & I are staying in San Juan, following a cruise. We'll have 2 half days & 1 full day. I'm wondering if we should take our full day to visit Vieques. I would love to see the bio bay too. Would it take a whole day, or just an evening. I notice that the ferries don't stay late enough for the bio show. Any tips.

Havi2000,
I saw the BioBay in Vieques and it is GREAT! Not to be missed. I've heard that there's another bio bay just off of Fajardo, so you might want to look into that. I have no other information on it other than the fact that it exists. |
We took the kayak trip and that was A LOT OF FUN! You get to feel how warm the water is, you get to swim and get surrounded by the dinoflagellates that swim in the water so there's this glow around you for everytime you move. My advice is to go on a MOONLESS night. If it's bright out, for example a full moon, you will not see the glowing waters...Just an fYI.

We have planned our trip to Vieques around the moon - that shouldn't be any problem. Redmaria, did you have a difficult time getting back in the kayak from the water?

We just got back from Puerto Rico and we did a kayak tour of the Biobay and I highly reccomend it. It was very fun. We had no problem getting in and out of the kayaks. Our guide was great and made it a very personnal experience. It was just my husband and I with the guide instead of on a boat with 40 people, we had a section of the bay to ourselves. We used Golden Heron Eco-tours. www.elenas-vieques.com is a helpful website.
