Vieques - where for kids & families
I've read up a bunch on the place but don't see much for places to stay w/kids or self-catering (cottages, etc.) Does anyone have any experience in this area ? My children are 5 & 2. Thanks to all !

you should find all the info you need on that website. there is a whole page of villa rentals. also most of the real estate agents handle rentals. most of the places to stay happen to be guest house-type places.
Have fun with your search and planning!! it is a great island!

Hi SAnParis,
We stayed at Hector's by the sea on Vieques in Nov 2006 for 4 nights. The casitas (2&3)are big enough for 4 with a small kitchen area equipped with a refridgerator and microwave plus a sink and coffee pot.
We stayed in casita 2 because it had an extra sofa bed and my kids prefer to sleep separately.
My kids are 16 & 10 and enjoyed the pool but the owners (Hector is from Puerto Rico and Mary is from US )prefered that the 10 year old didn't use the hot tub (for adults only).
There's a little lane down to a private beach where we paddled but the sea seemed too rough to swim in at the times we visited. Plenty of other beaches nearby of course.
We loved Vieques and would definitely return to Hector's.

I'm no help for hotels, but we liked Isabel II much better than Esperanza- it was a more bustling, vibrant town- Esperanza just seemed sleepy. We used www.vieques-island.com and www.viequesvisitor.com.

We prefered Esperanza for that reason!
It was also closer to the majority of the beaches and the biobay tour office.
Really our 'nightlife' was floating in the swimming pool or a biobay tour. We had one late dinner (8pm!) otherwise we were up early and snorkeling for hours.
Sleepy suited us as that's what we were by about 9pm!

With children I would highly recommend renting a villa. I would suggest going to www.enchanted-isle.com for a good selection of villas to rent by owner.
