My husband and I are taking our first trip to Vieques in May. We will be going on a biobay tour, and after reading some posts on Fodors, contacted Island Adventures about signing up for a kayaking biobay tour. Apparently, they only have a pontoon boat, though, and no kayaks. It sounds like the kayaks would be more fun - is that right? And if so, what kayak biobay tour group would you recommend? Thanks!

We have done the bio bay tour with Island Adventures on the pontoon boat a number of times. I prefer it to the kayak trip because it is easier to get in and out of the bay. Also on the way in and out you get a good bit of info on the flora and fauna of theisland. The boys on the boat are a fun and informative group.
But if you are the sort that prefers kayaking, then do that for sure. Check out Abe's and Blue Carib in Esperanza. On the Island Adventures website there is a moon calendar which shows the good nights to go.

we were in vieques in february and did the biobay tour with island adventures. the pontoon boat was not operational so we went out in kayaks. i was so happy we did because you are closer to the water and have a more intense experience. as far as i know, island adventures offers both.

I am wondering if Island Adventures only did the kayaks while the pontoon boat was under repair. They only have so much help and they do 2 tours a night when possible. so maybe the kayaks were a temporary solution while the boat was being fixed???

When I heard back from Island Adventures, they told me they don't have kayaks. Thanks for all the info everyone!

We would highly recommend Abe's for a kayak tour of the biobay. Abe is a very entertaining fellow. My opinion only, but having done both the kayak and the pontoon trips, I would prefer the kayak.

Just don't do the all day snorkeling and kayaking with Abe's. It's a lot of paddling to not go very far (we had really stiff breezes the day we went- we looked like seagulls flying against the wind, so it might be ok without that). And the mangrove paddling was awful- not so much paddling as pushing yourself off roots with your hands most of the way, only to turn around and go right back.

The kayak/biobay tour I'm talking about takes 1-1 1/2 hours and is very easy - not stressful at all (ie no mangroves).

Thanks everyone! I just booked with Abe's for the night biobay tour by kayak. Abe's responded quickly to my e-mail and gave me all sorts of helpful information. I'm very excited!

(We opted to snorkel with Aqua Frenzy ($25/pp call Tim to reserve: (787) 741-0913). Tim seemed very reliable to me, as he called the hotel prior to our late arrival to make sure we would be ready and to let us know the time. They even picked us up right at the hotel and our group was small, personable and unhurried. By the way, it was like swimming in stars and one of the more memorable experiences in my life. The fish in the lagoon were like shooting stars as they sped past our kayak. )
