The large AI resorts in the Mexican Yucatan south of Cancun might work. Almost all of them have kids programs during the day, lots of activities and evening shows. Plus there is a lot of offsite excursions to the Mayan ruins, or underground snorkeling in the cenotes.

The only one I am personally familiar with is the Barcelo Maya, but there are Rui's and Iberostars and many others of all prices and sizes.

Good luck in your planning.

Anyone who has taken their kids knows the answer is Atlantis. If your goal is for the kids to have fun this is the place.

what about if the goal is for the parents to have a great vacation, excellent dining, etc., and the kids to be entertained....

As for adults they either love it or hate it. If you judge by the occupancy rates I would say it's mostly positive. If the budget allows stay in Royal Towers, the other towers are 60's era cheap hotels that have been spiffed up.

we just heard about the four seasons punta mita...we live in ny, so we have to consider about 4-5 hours travel to mexico, then an hour to the resort...have you been to the ritz in cancun before??? i'm curious

I was in Cancun twice 10 years ago but not to R/C.From past experience I am confident we would enjoy any stay at a Four Seasons or R/C. I bet you will too.
