Update on Nassau Marriott?

Going to Nassau Marriott on Oct 5. Has anyone heard anything about recent Hurricane Floyd damage to hotel and/or island? I heard some restaurants in hotel were closed as of now, and hotel had suffered "minor" structural damage. Anyone been to this hotel or heard more? Many thanks-

Sonya, there was a bit of damage, but the hotel is up and running. I heard that some of the hotels at the Raddison were closed but not the Marriott, all the restaurants there are enclosed, except the beach bar. The pool was being fixed so should be fine by the time you get there or you can go next door to the Nassau Beach Hotel and use the pool there.

For good food and VERY reasonable prices go to the Nassau Beach for dinner at Johnny Canoe's, try the conch frittes or cracked conch (pronounced conk).

Have a great time.

tweedy

Thanks for info, Tweedy. I feel better now!! If only more hurricanes will stay away!!! Any more info you can provide will be very helpful. I've been to Freeport several times, but this is my first time to Nassau. Was Marriott a good choice?

You should have a great time at the Marriott. Cable Beach is a nice part of Nassau, with several resorts and restaurants in the area. Our favorite is next door at the Nassau Beach, Johnny Canoe's, Bahamian/Anmerican food, well priced and VERY good. Try the blooming onion and the conch fritters.

Downtown there is lots of shopping and you can get on the bus right outside the hotel, the #10 bus comes by every few minutes, and will take you downtown, you will see Ft. Charlotte on the way, on your right a fort overlooking the harbour that protected Nassau from Pirates in the 1800's.

Downtown there is alot to see, including the new Pirate Museum and the museum of the Bahamas on Bay St. For a great lunch try the Junkanoo Cafe, right next to the straw market.

For a special day you might want to try the fast ferry to an outisland to get the flavor and even thou it was damaged by the Hurricane, Harbour Island is a wonderful place to visit.

There are several nice snorkle trips, but the one that seems to be enjoyed most is the trip to Rose Island (better known as the booze cruise)

When you get to the hotel, there will be all kinds of brochures and discount shopping coupons, have a great time and enjoy the Bahamas.

tweedy

Sonya,

Another great place to eat is downtown Nassau in the harbor and it is called the Poop Deck. Great food and and great view of the harbor and bridge to Paradise Island. I hope the harbor is still is good shape.

Dear Sonya, If you want a small snorkeling trip, ask for Kendall Flowers at The Kings and Knight show and the Nassau Beach Club. He is the drummer. Hopefully his boat was not damaged in the hurricane. He took 8 of us out including 4 teenagers. He is very safe and goes to wonderful spots.. His boat may not look the best but he is reliable. He has been taking my husband's cousin and her lady friends out for 15 years. Have a great time.

I am so glad you had a good time, Nassau this time of year is really wonderful, hot during the day and cool in the evenings and probably not much rain.

Glad I could be of help, next time try one of the Bahamian "Family Islands" too to get a feel of the real Bahamas.

Take care and keep in touch

tweedy
