Hello all!! We are two newly divorced females that are in need of a January vacation destination. We need fun, nightlife, warm beaches, and swim up bars! We don't want to end up in the middle of honemoon island or married island, as the point of the break is to not think about weddings or divorces. (No offense married people - I respect you all and think you are amazing but it just isn't where we are now) We would also like to avoid a super young (just turned 21) population as well. Our budget is very flexible...so please suggest anything!

So any suggestions on where to go or where to avoid would be awesome.

I love Negril Jamaica. But it's not so much a "swim up bar" kind of place. A few mega resorts, but more just cool hotels on a gorgeous 7-mile white sand beach. You fly into Montego Bay then it's 90 mins. by shuttle ($30pp) out to Negril.

For more resort-y, I recommend the Mayan Riviera, the Caribbean coast of Mexico. You fly into Cancun, then head south 45 mins. to the area around the town of Playa del Carmen.

If you want a varied experience/options I may well opt for Puerto Rico. Split your time between OSJ & Rincon or something similar - I could easily split time between these two places - http://www.elconvento.com/ & http://www.horneddorset.com/home.html

How old....er....young are you two young ladies - that may also impact your responses.

I'd go with Punta Cana in the Dominican republic. Gorgeous beaches, clubs on the resorts, lots of people to party with, casino's on most resorts. Swim up bars, and lots of stuff to do on the island itself. Like all islands in the caribbean, off the resort is more run down. Don't go off on your own, go with a tour group. Plus most if not all resorts are all inclusive!

The thing about Punta Cana is people look only to their own resort for entertainment, food, activities.

Whereas when you to go Mexico, like around Playa del Carmen, you have your resort PLUS a vibrant downtown area with clubs, shopping, etc. and the freedom to safely go around on your own.

The thing about going to the Caribbean in January is you think everywhere is going to be warm/hot and great beach weather. Sadly this is not true. Some of the more northern locations can be cool and definitely too cold to get in the water. We've even experienced too-cold-for-swimming weather in November and December. So for January traveling I'd head far south.

Take a look at Aruba and Barbados. I think the Palm Beach area of Aruba will fit what you're looking for. There are a lot of restaurants, shopping and nightlife within walking distance of many of the hotels on Palm Beach. Take a look at the Radisson and the Hyatt, both nice resorts in a great location.
