Turks & Caicos

Looking for a tropical destination that I have never visited. I have heard great things about Turks & Caicos. Would appreciate reviews and hotel recs. Amanyara looks gorgeous but insanely expensive and quite remote. Perhaps Grace Bay Club? How is the food on the islands? Also, is there a town to walk around in on Providenciales? I cannot find one photo online.

Start with Fodor's In Focus: Turks and Caicos (You can buy at Amazon)

Reviews of everything, things to do, etc. After that, come back here with a budget and time frame (nights and time of year) and we can help you narrow down!

Food is good on the island - like all destinations there's something to satisfy everyone's taste.

To answer your question about a "town" - it depends on which island in the chain you are visiting. The main island of Providenciales (aka Provo) and Grand Turk have "towns as you know them. The other islands are more sparsely populated and have little in the way of towns or shopping.

So, in order to make meaningful recommendations you need to tell us which island are you considering and what's your budget is for accommodations? All you've really told us is that you find Amanyara "insanely expensive" which is not surprising since 97%+ of the visitors to the T&C will have that same thought. Tell us in dollars what you can afford and we'll help you.

To briefly answer your other questions: T&C is a fairly quiet island, which is how I like it. There's not much of a town in Provo, just a few blocks of shops, grocery stores, restaurants.

However... Grace Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the islands. And many of the restaurants ( COCO BISTRO, BAY BISTRO, SOMEWHERE CAFE,etc) are excellent.

Save yourself some money and search out T& C at http://www.TripAdvisor.com. You'll be able to see reviews and recommendations! My niece just arrived there last week to work in the area of pilates; I don't know which specific island that she has found herself for two years.

Lots of reasons to travel here to Grace Bay, Providenciales JBeth - that's for sure - as several other posters mentions above. Lovely resorts, restaurants, loads to do on the water, and the world's best beach!

My wife and I have been to Turks and Caicos twice, staying both times at the Coral Gardens resort at about the center of Grace Bay, one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. The resort is small, but has hotel type rooms and suites facing the sea. A small restaurant faces the beach on the back of the hotel, with typical Caribbean style food, and a fairly lively bar visited by locals. Rent a car for the week..driving on the left..have fun, and explore the island. Don't bother with Grand Turk, it is a dump. Cruise ships stop there and Margaritaville, but it is not worth the trip.
WE have been to the Caribbean, Bermuda, the Bahamas and T&C collectively over fifty times since 1991 and T&C is at the top of the destination list, followed by Bermuda, Grand Cayman and Isla Mujeres, Mexico
