Trip Report - Holguin/Guardalavaca areas
We just returned this morning from Sol Rio de Mares hotel near Guardalavaca, Cuba. We had a wonderful time, although the weather was cloudier and windier than we would have prefered.
The hotel is beside the Sol Rio de Luna hotel and just down the beach (Playa Esmeralda) from the 5 Star Sol Rio de Oro. The Sol Rio de Mares was a nice hotel - good food, lots to do, excellent entertainment and a friendly staff.
If anyone has any questions or comments I would be pleased to respond to them.

Leaving for a two week trip to Holguin the end of this month. have never been to this part of the Island. Was in Varadero, two years ago and was so impressed with the beaches and the surf was wondering if this area was along the same line. Was however very disappointed with the snorkeling and hope that this area would be an improvement. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

hi kevin...have visited Varadero like you twice, cayo coco and Holguin last year (Melia rio de oro) can tell you that snorkeling is much better there...Especially at Playa Esmeralda, along the big rock (youll see what I mean. I really like Holguin...it's a much more rural, friendly area...Have a goof time.

Hi Kevin
I recently stayed at Cayo Guillermo, an island accessible off of Cayo Coco. I really enjoyed the beaches and the resort that we stayed at (just upgraded to 4*). I liked the snorkelling but would like to return to Cuba and try another location with better snorkelling and closer to the Cuban culture (we were 42 km from the next resort and that was another 50km from a city). What did you think of the snorkelling? what could you see? how close were you to a cuban village/town/city? were you pestered by people for "gifts" or tips? Would most people feel safe to travel in twos? What was the hotel like? Which hotel had the best value for the money...Sol Rio de Luna or Sol Rio de Oro?
I loved my stay in CUba and would like to visit different areas that offer different things...but it does need to have a good beach.
waht's your opinion?

We were in Santiago de cuba Mar. of 2000 and want to go to the Holguin area. The Sierra Mar resort was away from tourism and we really enjoy that. Which place would you suggest for Holguin area Las Brisas, Sol Rio de Mares, Lti Costa Verde or sol Club cayo Gullermo.

Hi everyone. I go to Guardalavaca every year at least 3 times. I enjoy the people and the beach. The snorkelling is great as the reef runs right along the shore about a mile or 2 out in the ocean. It's the people I go back for. They're friendly honest and trustworthy. I have no problem going there on my own and no problem walking anywhere by myself even at night. I've made many friends and they treat me like family. We keep in touch all year and they have never once asked me to bring them anything from Canada although I do bring tons of stuff down for them anyway. They are very proud and sometimes have a difficult time accepting things that I bring for them.
I stay at Club Guardalavaca most of the time but I have stayed at the Atlantico twice. Club Guardalavaca is an older hotel across the street from the beach. It consists of 4 two storey buildings with a large pool,a wading pool for kids and mini golf. The Atlantico is right on the beach and is a nicer hotel cosmetically but the people aren't as friendly.I would reccommend either hotel although I prefer The Guardalavaca because I know all the staff and am treated very well there. I'll be going back again at the end of October and I can't wait to get there and see all my friends.
