Trinidad & Tobago -Safe to visit with children?

We were considering taking the kids (7 & 9 yr. olds) with us to visit Trinidad & Tobago. Is this advisable and are these islands suitable for visits from families with young children? It seems not too many people go there; and they appear not as developed as, say, Barbados; but Air Canada has a direct flight from Toronto. Any help would be appreciated.

We are both from T & T, living temporarily in NY. We must tell you, Trinidad is the most developed of any of the Caribbean Islands. Your perception is unfortunately all to common due to our country's lack of reliance on tourism. Unlike other islands such as Jamaica and Barbados which depend solely on tourist dollars for their survival, Trinidad is rich in natural resources such as petroleum and asphalt. Hence the reason we never focused on tourism. However, Trinidadians are some of the friendliest and most dignified people you could ever hope to meet. Both islands are rich in natural beauty and flora and fauna. The beaches in Tobago are some of the most spectacular on earth. It is more than safe to visit. Like anyplace else in the world, there are good areas and bad areas. Just as you would take your children to visit Manhattan, you would under no circumstances take them to visit the South Bronx or Harlem.
