travel between islands

We are going to St. Eustatius and are trying to find a cheaper way to travel from St. Martin to Statia than the airline. one way fare is 182$, and there are 6 of us. That's crazy (it's only 38 miles away!)since it only costs us slightly more to get to St. Martin all the way from Arizona!
There seems to be no ferry service to Statia from St. Martin, but we are wondering if we can get a ferry from St. Martin to another island, then get to Statia from there. Any ideas?

Anyone ever chartered a boat?

There is a man on St Kitts that charters to St Martin but with the price of gas in SK, Statia and St Martin, $182.00 is cheap.

There's no scheduled ferry service between SXM and St. Eustatia or from any other island in the immediate area for that matter.

FYI - 38 miles across "open water" is not considered "close" when talking about inter-island travel. It makes for a long (about 4 to 5 hours) and uncomfortable ride (very wavy). If you go by charter - it will also cost you a lot more than $182 - figure around $600 to $800 for a boat big enough to make the trip.

Flying is your only practical way - check Winair (www.fly-winair.com) or Liat (www.liatairline.com) for schedules and fares.
