transportation St. Thomas to St John

We are a group of 19. Is there any method of getting to Trunk Bay, St. Johns, that doesn't involve $36+ per person round trip-taxi to red hook, ferry, taxi to Trunk Bay and return.

I don't know how else you'd do it except with the help of taxis and the ferry. You will need to get from wherever you are staying to the dock and then from the ferry dock in Cruz Bay to Trunk Bay.
$36 for this kind of excursion is actually pretty reasonable.

you could contact one of the many charter boats that would include Trunk Bay as one of their destinations or you could hire a water taxi, Dohm's 340-775-6501. The ferry from Charlotte Amalie doesn't fit the schedule? Taxi fare would not be as much if you are coming from Havensight.
First of all it's St. John!!! Not St. John's. Get it friggin right.

I'm not trying to be flippant here, but if you're that concerned about the cost of transportation between St. Thomas and St. John, why not consider staying in St. Thomas and forgetting about St. John? This is going to be an expensive trip no matter which way you slice it--there are no "cheap" destinations in the Caribbean, and you're going to be miserable if you start worrying about nickel-and-dime stuff. And $36, given the rest of your expenses, IS nickel-and-dime stuff in this case. If you're hell-bent on St. John, stop worrying about this--it's the least of your problems traveling with such a large group, believe me.
in defense of L since the question seems to have caused some anger, it looks like someone might be looking for some negotiable prices for a group that large eg. group rates. Betcha L is a cruiser looking for a deal. No problem with trying to save some $$$. Also probably forgot to add in the admission to Trunk, the only beach on St. John where you pay $4 a head!

I'm afraid you are looking at a piece of change for your proposed outing. Taxi to Red Hook, depending on where you come from is at least 5.00 per person. Public ferry is 3.00 one way. To taxi to Trunk Bay you could hire one of those open safari buses and on the basis of the number of persons you may be able to bargain with the driver to give you something of a deal if he takes you there and picks you back up to take you back to the ferry. I live in the BVI and did a day visit to St John with a pretty large group about a year ago and I beleive we worked out a deal with a driver of a safari bus to take us around - ended up paying him about 15.00 per person and for this he took us for a tour around the island, made several pit stops so we could gawk at the views and take pictures, waited for us while we had lunch etc. We thought it was reasonable and besides, these people have to earn a living - you must understand.

Dear L. Gilkes: Why don't you put some helpful information in your post. For instance, admit that you are coming in on a cruise ship that docks in Charlotte Amelia. That way we would know you have very limited time. Next you moron, have you considered renting several mini-vans and doing it yourself. If you just want to save a couple of $$'s this might help you. Next you idiot, you could also hire a water taxi or charter a boat to take you there from St. Thomas. We can't do everything for you, do some research yourself.
