transportation in st john

Hi -- We are staying at a villa on the Westin property. Do we need a car to get around or can we use taxis? Thx.

Taxis are very efficient on St. John. If you're not going to be driving all over (and the island isn't that huge) every day, it's easier to grab a taxi, in my opinion.

The open jitneys are very plentifulat the Westin and in town and probably cost about $5/person each way into Cruz Bay.

But we are 5 people (2 adults and 3 kids). That's $50 each time we leave the property. How often would we want to leave...maybe it's cheaper to rent a car????

It will cost you about $480/week for a Jeep Liberty that takes 5 people with room in the rear for snorkling gear, towels, and chairs. A bit more than using taxis, but a great deal more flexability.

Try Varlack rentels about a block from the ferry dock. They are an old St. John family.

my suggestion would be to rent a car for a few days. taxis are fine going to and from the westin into cruz bay... but you really should take a day or two to explore this beautiful island. it's an adventure and quite safe to drive around. it would be nice to check out some of the north shore beaches and just stop when you want/leave when you want...no pressure. a visit to coral bay and the east end are a must too.. which you can't access with a taxi... maybe it's easy to grab a cab but i like my freedom....just my opinion !!
