for number, variety and quality of beaches Virgin Gorda. Tortola is busier, has more excitement, beach bars and activity. For a honeymoon, if it is high end you are looking for Virgin Gorda has a choice of resorts and many moderate accomodations on lovely beaches. Tortola has more reasonable and less luxurious accomodations.

My vote is for Tortola beaches over Virgin Gorda. This March, I visted the BVI, and my goal was to explore as many beaches on as many islands as possible. Tortola has many more excellent beaches then given credit for, however you have to be an adventure seeker to find them. Long Bay -Beef island in propably the best beach. Cane Garden Bay is extra calm beach, with bars/hotels with a fabulous veiw of St. Thomas at night. Brewers Bay has good snorkeling, Lambert Bay has turtles, Trunk Bay is only accessible by boat or hike. Smuggglers Bay is very pretty.

On the other, Virgin Gorda's best beach by far was Little Trunk Bay, a short hike beyond Spring Bay and the Baths. Although I rank this beach the 2nd best behind only Deadmans Bay (Peter Island), it was VG only great one. I found the North Sound and Savannah Bay ok, too many reefs close to the beach line shore. Make sure you give your favorites when you get back from you trip.

Oh yes, the second part of your question, for a Honeymoon I'd pick Virgin Gorda. It's much quitier, peaceful and less to do (get it)! Tortola has much less upscale resorts except Long Bay. Enjoy.

If would seem to me that what is suited for a honeymoon is a very personal matter and also dependent what is prudent in cost considering that funds needed to build a future together is the most important consideration. A suitable honeymoon can be created most likely withing a few hundred mile of home. We even cut ours short and used the money saved to buy a few essential things for our new home. Those were the days before credit cards and you had to deal in cash. Things have changed.

The real question what is your budget and what does it take to please you both? Neither place you mentioned have what you would call great beaches and I have no idea what really defines a great beach other than I have seen some that people have defined that way. We like small coves with rocks and coral if possible -- not much coral in BVI until you get to Anegada. If money was not a consideration we would chose Guana Island in the BVI. If you really want to be on Virgin Gorda, Biras Creek. Little Dix is too commercial for our tastes today but it might please you. In the same general area, on a budget, we would choose Cooper Island or Anegada.

There are all kinds of other places that might fit your tastes but I have tried to stay in the BVI area.

I know I have left Tortola out of my comments however you said suited for a honeymoon. If it were us and we had bucks, we would pick Guana Island. www.guana.com or Cooper Island if funds were limited. www.cooper-island.com.
When we married I only had 900 bucks so I did not have your type of problem and we saved money to boot along the way. It was a mutual decision.
