Tortola, St John or Virgin Gorda
Did you prefer VG, St john or Tortola? Or would you try to visit all 3 islands?
If only choosing British Islands, would you stay on Virgin Gorda, or Tortola? |
Both are great -- however Tortola is centrally located and you can easily take day-trips(either by ferry or day-sail trips) to Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke. Great selection of casual beach restaurants/bars.

We prefer VG. When we visited BVI the first time we stayed at tortola and visited VG and JVD. Loved VG and went back another year and stayed on VG. VG is more quaint in my opinion and quiet. I also love the beaches on VG. You can also take a trip to Anegada from VG.

have u stayed at Guavaberry or Mango Bay in VG?
have you stayed @ Mongoose or Agape in Tortola? |
Just back from a week+ at Mango Bay - super comfortable 1-bedroom apartment.
We had also considered Guavaberry, checked it out while there, also would have been a good choice. Spring Bay is beautiful. In my opinion Gorda has much better beaches than Tortola. Also, Road Town has become obnoxious when cruise ships are in port (wasn't a problem several years ago). St. John is gorgeous but figuring out where to stay is a challenge - I would probably vacation there only if I could afford Caneel Bay, or maybe a villa. (I have explored the island quite a bit on daytrips from St. Thomas). VG is VERY laid back - only about 2000 year-round residents, goats and chickens on the roads. One thing I loved was that you could walk in the water almost anywhere and have very good snorkeling. All things considered, I vote for VG. |
We stayed at Mango Bay Resort last June. We loved it. We had a garden view unit but it was still VERY close to the water. The beach is lovely there. Our unit was good size and very clean. Gino and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
If you go there, make sure you eat at the Flying Iguana... a small, casual restaurant by the airport. Great food and a nice ocean view. Carole |
I'll join the crowd and vote for Virgin Gorda. There are many accomodations there on the water (Mahoe Bay where Mango Bay Resort is) is lovely. Tortola has fewer beaches that you can stay directly on and they are not as nice nor is the snorkeling from shore as good. It is more like St. John than is Tortola. St. John choices are very limited as to beachfront - Caneel Bay and a few cottages and are pricey. Highly recommend Bobby's for provisioning as you can do it online and altho it's on Tortola, they will deliver to Virgin Gorda.

Caneel Bay on St John is simply amazing. We also really enjoyed boating through the BVIs and stayed at the Bitter End Yacht Club, also fantastic.
