Tortola, Long Bay Beach Resort

Has anyone been there in the past few months? I am looking for recent information about your experience. I just booked a cabana for the week after Christmas and I think I might have buyer's remorse. I'm actually considering calling them and letting them know that fodors' travellers don't think too fondly of them. I am wondering if I should make arrangements to rent a jeep to travel to other beaches for swimming and snorkeling?

I don't know about "buyer's remorse" and it might be too late to change anything but definitely plan on renting a jeep or taxiing to other beaches. We spent tooo long there one time sitting on the beach unable to get into the water above our ankles because of the rough surf and rocky water line. But, of course, that's a seasonal thing and never having been there in December/January, I'm not sure of the conditions then. By February most of the beaches on that shore are unswimmable with rough surf and strong currents except a few protected coves despite Long Bay's assurances that the beach is very swimmable! Good luck! Go enjoy and have fun if you like to jeep about!

Don't have remorse. Just plan on renting a Jeep and enjoy! Even when the waters are calm, it's best to have wheels. It's a great island to explore. Have fun!!

Someone compared the water at LB to the Atlantic side of Florida! The water is "caribbean clear" isn't it?
Also, I have never seen so many "polar opposite" reviews of any 1 resort before. It seems you either love LB or hate it. Anyone been there this past summer? How is it really? Trying to decide between LB & Frenchman's Cay & BEYC on Virgin Gorda.

See our post "Just back from Frenchmans Cay". We didn't select Long Bay because of the negative comments on this board. Other than the rocks in the water making swimming questionable, we found the dining and rooms very nice. We met several guests who showed us there rooms. They seemed to be pleased with their stay. It is a rough ride in a jeep to the nearest beach-Smugglers Cove. You need a jeep to go anywhere on Tortola. We enjoyed the Olde Yard Inn/Savannah Bay combination on Virgin Gorda better.

Hi Andrea -
Just got back this week and while I didn't stay at Long Bay this time I did visit.

First, regardless of where you stay on Tortola you need a vehicle. To stay put is to miss Tortola's best asset...variety! I can't stress this enough. If you were looking for a resort where you kick back and Pablo brings you boat drinks every hour, you won't find it on Tortola.

The winter swells are in now so the surf is going to be up on all beaches on Tortola's North shore. Its hit or miss on any given day so if you get surf at Smuggler's Cove head for Brewer's Bay, etc.

The day I checked out Long Bay the surf at Smuggler's was worse. We stayed at Smuggler's and played in the breakers. Great stuff.

The water at Long Bay is classic Carib in color. Although the stretch along the resort is rocky, another 40 yards to the west is a very sandy bottom that poses no threat.

The construction at LBBR is either complete or all indoor finish work now. Noticed no construction noise.

When I did stay there it was in a Cabana and we loved it!! The room is comfortable, airy, private, clean and there's a huge shower to play in.

There's nothing like having that beautiful beach just steps away. Please note that even Long Bay's detractors conceed the beauty of the beach.

Beware arriving in the BVI expecting a bad time. Since the only person there capable of spoiling your visit is you, you will likely succeed.

Dave
