Tortola beaches -- bumpy ride?
I am planning a trip to Tortola. Although I don't plan to spend all my time at the beach, I would like to visit some of the nicer ones... However, I have a back problem and have heard that the ride to some of the island's beaches is a recipe for whiplash! Any comments? Thanks!

Almost all the roads on TOrtola are similar to a rollercoaster...Twists and turns, steep inclines etc. It is an adventure to drive!!! I have a slipped disc and was fine driving. You just have to go slow!!! Good luck...

Twists and turns I can handle -- it jarring bumps that worry me!

Sounds like a good reason to rent a vehicle, rather than take taxis. That way YOU can control the speed.

We thought the bumpy ride to Smuggler's Cove (dirt road) was well worth it. When a faster vehicle came up behind us, we just looked for a place to pull over so it could pass and we could keep plodding along.

You will want a 4WD - not for traction, but for ground clearance.

There are numerous speed bumps on the paved road along the north shore. Just slow down to about 2 MPH and you'll be fine.

The ride into Smuggler's is pretty bad. I thought sure I was gonna need a new kidney each time I did it. You can walk in if that's easier on you but it is a hot walk! Brewer's is a bit of a walk too. Those are your two nicest beaches.
