Tobago accommodations?

Thirty years ago, we stayed at a place in Tobago which this many years later continues to be one of our favorite spots in the Caribbean. The place was Arnos Vale, and we loved it because it was gorgeous (topography, plus lots of flowers and lushness, plus lots of totally private pocket beaches)-- PLUS as good snorkeling off the beach (beaches!) as we've ever had (including, e.g. at St John and Bonaire). We returned to Tobago about 5 years ago (even tho we knew Arnos Vale was no longer in operation), and at that time we saw nothing of the quality that had once been there-- and of course none of the wonderful privacy. I'd love to hear from someone that Tobago has since gotten a first-rate resort (last 5 years or so). Main thing we're looking for is terrific snorkeling right from the beach and handsome surroundings and accommodations. Thank you!

Hello Poss,
I'm not sure about resorts but if you want something upscale look into renting a villa and that will give alot of privacy as well, many with private pools. Most have maid service, some a cook as well...you buy the groceries. The company we use is Island Investments at www.islreal.com

Poss:

I've been researching Tobago also. There are numerous accommodation reviews at this site:

Hi, Poss,
The Arnos Vale still exists. However, it is far from its glory days when Princess Margaret stayed there. New owners are sprucing it up, but it is not a luxury hotel at all.
The newest "first-rate" resorts on the island are the Hilton and the Blue Haven. The Blue Haven is actually quite old, but has been totally refurbished in the past few years. (It is on the beach where "Swiss Family Robinson" was filmed, plus another movie with Robert Mitchum, who allegedly tore up the bar at the Blue Haven.) We've stayed at the Hilton, and there is no good snorkeling there. I don't know about snorkeling at the Blue Have. From what I've heard during our six visits to Tobago (going back in February for the seventh), the Arnos Vale and the Blue Waters Inn have snorkeling off their beaches. The Blue Waters is in a beautiful, isolated setting, but its rooms can be best described as basic.

We stayed at the Blue Waters Inn in March 2004 and it felt like paradise. Absolutely gorgeous setting. As the previous poster said, the rooms were basic and the food wasn't fantastic but was plentiful. I loved it.
