To Statia and other sxm experts
What should we expect to pay for a cab from sxm airport to Grand Case BC?
We have 6 days/5 nights - is there any one thing we should not miss out on above all? What is your favorite romantic restaurant, casual restaurant, bar, and casino? Jeweler? We will probably rent a car for a couple of days - what are the most beautiful places to visit? Any other tips? |
Hi Missj. Congrats on your upcoming trip to SXM.
I honestly haven't paid cab fare to Grand Case in quite awhile since I usually rent a car, but my guess would be about $15...give or take. There is really quite a lot to see and do on SXM. Be sure to spend some time shopping in Marigot (don't miss market day...I think it's Wednesday), visit Orient Bay, the Butterfly Farm, the fabulous restaurants in Grand Case, walk the calm ocean wake Grand Case Bay after dusk, take a ferry to Anguilla's Shoal Bay for the day, experience the hustle and bustle of Phillipsburg one afternoon, see Sunset Beach Bar, Cheri's Cafe and the Maho area one evening.....I could go on and on. What specifically interests you? Let me know and I can offer more suggestions. I don't do casino's, quite honestly, but have had some wonderful meals at various places on Restaurant Row in Grand Case, as well as the marina in Marigot. What type of food and atmosphere are you looking for? My favorite romantic restaurant is L'Escapade, but that's because my DH and I celebrated our one year anniversary there over ten years ago, so it holds a special place in my heart. However, there are MANY other gems to be had on SXM. As far as casual restaurants, we really like Lee's Roadside Grill in Simpson Bay. And, of course, the Lolo's in Grand Case are not to be missed. Talk of the Town has the best fare. You won't be sorry if you try this "local fare" one day. My jeweler is Pradeep at AMA Jewelers location at Princess Juliana Airport. Tell him that his "dear friends" from Statia sent you. I highly advise a car rental for a couple of days, at least. As long as you are hanging around Grand Case you won't need one, but there will be those few days that you will want to venture out and explore. I know there are a lot more places I can mention, but it's getting late here. So, I'd be happy to help you out with any more info that I can. Just ask. I'm sure you'll also get other great advice from other Fodorites on the board. |
thanks!

We take cabs fairly regularly and I would say that the cab fare from the airport to Grand Case will probably be about $30. It costs us about $40 to go from the airport to Le Meridian, so I would say $30 is fair. They are open to negotiating.
There are lots of great restaurants in Grand Case and you really can't go wrong. Some of our favorites are Bistrot Caraibes, Little France, Rainbow. We have also heard really great things about Le Pressoir and Le Cottage. (Unfortunately you run out of time and can't try every place.) Ditto on the Orient Beach....don't miss it. If you have time, stop by Baywatch on the beach and have a snack with my friends Andy and Cheryl. Enjoy. |
Visit Anse Marcel (a short drive from Orient Beach). It's a secluded little cove with a nice beach and some pretty good snorkling. It's a beautiful area. The view is outstanding on the drive in.

Lizzie is probably more accurate with the cab fare. I can't be certain myself since I haven't taken a cab to that area in a number of years.
Lizzie, are Andy & Cheryl still on island? I was told they went back to the US some time ago. I'm glad to hear that they are still around if that's the case. We've been hanging out at their establishments since they had the very first Surf Club South right on the beach in Grand Case. They are a lot of fun. |
Statia, yes Andy and Cheryl are still on the island. They went back to the US recently for an extended visit during the slow season, but they are definitely still there. I too enjoyed my times at the old Surf Club South in Grand Case, and have followed them to all their subsequent spots.
