Tips on Jewelry--St.Thomas
Any suggestions on establishments, bartering etc. in St. Thomas for purchasing high end jewelry? (Rip offs, deals, etc)
Find an item you really like and get some prices on it at the various stores. I don't tell them if I'm on a ship or staying there. (Ive done both). I have them write their best price on their card and tell them I'm looking further or want to check with my husband. I do have a favorite small store "The Grand" on Main street and he seems to get me the item at a better price. Even if you're looking for an item that you don't see in the cases, ask, including watchesI haven't figured out a percentage though. I also check prices here, if I'm buying a common item. I have always had larger items appraised here when I get back and they are a good value and good quality. Happy shopping!

You will probably not get any great deals in most stores on the islands.
Having been in the Jewelry business for many years, I can say that the prices are slightly better than full retail in major U.S. Jewelry outlets, but no better than what you can get almost anywhere if you bargain. However, if you want a nice souvenir from your trip, by all means buy one.

The standard discount for named jewelry like Mikimoto, Philippe Charriol, etc is around 20% off US retail with no tax. Some manufactures have agreements not to discount more and they are ones you will not find on sale stateside usually. Loose stones no matter the value are duty free. It is a good idea to be well educated as to the stones that you are purchasing including the prices at home. You can and will get good bargains but be prepared to bargain hard and walk away. Some prefer the smaller stores thinking that they get better deals but others prefer the larger known stores so that if a problem does arise they have recourse. I have been very pleased with the jewelry and the prices on St. Thomas and I live in NYC and have the the Diamond District nearby. But do your homework on the stones!
