Tip for the Concierge?
Curious if others tip the concierge at their resort? We never have and just realized we have probably been terrible guests! They make quite a few arrangements for us when we are there for a week....had always thought the service charge covered us.
Please let me know if you tip and how much? |
Obviousily it vaies from resort to resort (the more upscale the more times you are expected to tip). For general information, such as the name of a restaurant or directions to a local sight, it's not necessary to give the concierge a tip. I tip $5US for each dinner reservations at an upscale restaurant or if the concierge arranges for a private tour. If he/she does something really special, like arranging for a daysail with a catered picnic lunch then a bigger tip $25US to $50US (depening on the cost of the trip) would be appropriate.

I tip when the concierge is especially helpful -- selling stamps or mailing a postcard doesn't count! Getting a good dinner reservation on Valentine's Day does ($5-$10). Arranging for dinner reservations, tours, dining recommendations, ferry schedules, car service, etc. during the course of several days' stay yields $50 plus a personal note at the end of my stay (especially when they learned my name at the first encounter and greeted me by name each time I passed by).
Of course, it depends on the locale. In the US, tipping is customary. In Australia, by comparison, tipping is not really part of the culture, so a far more modest tip for extraordinary service is all that is necessary. I'm not sure what the custom is in the Caribbean, but I've never stayed in a hotel large enough to have one. |
You should tip a percentage of what they booked for you. If they booked a fishing trip or diving trip and it was $200-$300, you should tip them 10%.

They're mistaken...we arrive 2/17! Just checked my confirmation and seems all is fine. Just think they got confused.
