Tiki Huts
 

Can anyone advise the status of the Tiki Hut beach on the west side of the island?

Not sure what you mean by status, it hasn't changed recently to my knowledge. Its a remote beach reached only by 4wd on the west side of Provo. What remains there are the Tiki Huts left over from some French film crew a few years ago. In and around the huts themselves there was a lot of broken glass. Away from the huts the beach is great. There is a good reef for snorkeling there but there are no facilities there, pack a cooler. Here's are some pics of the beach:

Definitely worth a morning/afternoon or day trip.

We were there last December and enjoyed the trip. There's only a short stretch of the road that really requires 4WD, but that short stretch is truly awful. I recommend a SMALL 4wd to avoid scratching the sides with bushes.

The roofs of the huts are gone but the remaining structures provide some shade. We had been warned about broken glass but saw almost none (maybe someone cleaned it up, or the sand was hiding it?).

The beach there is beautiful and there were only a handful of people. We didn't find very good snorkeling but perhaps we weren't looking in the correct area - you might want to ask for specifics before you go.

The area where the Tiki Huts are located is actually called the Northwest Point. It is a wonderful place to snorkel, as the water isn't so very deep. There's lots of coral and lots of fish. Also, there's a coral wall that lines part of the coast line and forms a cove. But there is also sandy beach where the huts are that you can swim to. I didn't find glass, but the coral is difficult to manuever around when getting out of the water.

We went there on a snorkel trip with Dive Provo (via boat, not 4WD). You can contact them on line at www.diveprovo.com. Ask them about their trip to Northwest Point; when we were there they only ran that trip one day a week, so you may want to find out what day that would be. I thought the NW Point trip was great!!! In fact, all their snorkel trips are fun. We've gone out with them several times and found them to be a very professional crew.

I read a comment somewhere on the Web that the huts did not survive this past hurricane season - not sure if that is accurate.

Even if they're gone, it's still worth a trip.

Of course still go, Tiki Huts aren't the draw its the beach, remoteness and snorkeling...no one really used the Tiki Huts anyway but just walked through.
