Thoughts/experiences re: Grenada
Just wondering if anyone has been to Grenada -- I was reading a bit about it tonight and it seems lovely with great character. I'm curious as to why it doesn't get mentioned much on these threads. I read some of the old threads on it. Has anyone been there who can share their experiences?

I think it sounds beautiful too. Check out the discussion forum on www.grenadaexplorer.com. When I originally saw your post I thought about Grenada and Tobago for your two islands.

Hi Honeymooner14
I was also a honeymooner earlier this year! I got married in March and honeymooned in Grenada and Tobago - a week in each. I stayed in LaLuna in Grenada and in Coco Reef Hotel in Tobago. If you do a search on my name you should be able to find details on each of these, but please do feel free to ask any further questions. Angela |
Hi honeymooner14,
I have been to Grenada before in 2001 and I am going again at the end of September.I stayed at La Source last time, and I am staying there again this time. The island has yet to be overun with commercial tourism, and it's biggest attractions are beaches and nature. The capital of St.George's is very pretty, with old buildings and the carenage. Once you negotiate the hills you are rewarded with fantastic views. I did not get to visit the island of Carriacou or the Grenadines the last time I was there, but this time I am hoping to. You would think there isn't much to do on Grenada but there are lots of places to explore; an Island Tour, Belmont Estate, La Sagesse Nature Centre, Grand Anse and Mourne Rouge Beach. But the best activity of all is to relax on the beach. If you have anymore questions do not hesitate to ask. |
Grenada IS wonderful, and part of what makes it so is that is hasn't been overrun with tourists ... so you don't hear as much about it as some more popular destinations.
One of the reasons that tourism is not running rampant is that it is a challenge to get to Grenada -- not impossible, but not a long weekend getaway either. Back in the early 90s, American Airlines used to have jet service from SJU, with close connections. Now, AA has changed its schedule to have LOOONG layovers in San Juan for most arriving passengers from the U.S., and has changed its service from jets to turboprops (which make it a 2.5 hour flight). All told, my travel day the last time I went to Grenada was 17 hours from door to door (but worth it!). There is other airline service into Grenada, but it's not necessarily easier that AA. BWIA, for example, requires an overnight stay in Trinidad. Air Jamaica's service seems to require lots of hops. USAir might be doing a little better. |
My wife and I vacationed in Grenda this past February/March. We absolutely loved it and would not hesitate to go back. I posted a trip report under Grenada (dated March 14/03). If you do decide to go you will not be disappointed.

I too have been to Grenada - stayed at Spice Island - and would count it as oneof my favorite Caribbean islands.
We found the people to be some of the friendliest anywhere, and the island was gorgeous. If you go, be sure to take an island tour or two. |
We really liked Grenada, but really didn't do much other than relax. I wrote a trip report on epinions if you're interested.

I've been there 6 times now. When I go, I stay in a self-catering hotel or inn, rent a car, and spend most of my time exploring the island. For a first time visit, I'd recommend going on one of the many island tours to get a flavor of the island. Almost all of the tourist facilities are in the southern part of the island, between the airport and St. Georges. That is where Grand Anse Beach is located. The center of the island is rainforest criss-crossed by hiking trails. You can hike to the top of a mountain, around a crater lake, or to several waterfalls. You can find deserted beaches on the north and east coasts. When I was there this past winter, I noticed a large resort and golf course under construction at the northern tip of the island, at Levera National Park. I'm afraid of what this sort of thing is going to do to the that part of the island.
