The camera gods were against us

Hi all. We returned from a great trip to Grand Cayman late Wednesday night but I can't bring myself to do a report or post pics yet because half of my vacation photos are gone. I have had a perpetual stomach ache since our return.

We actually had 2 incidents...the first was halfway through the trip, my husband's Olympus Stylus which can be used underwater just died. I assume some water got into places it shouldn't have. I was freaked out because I couldn't see any of the pics I had taken up to that point but luckily hubby's new computer which he brought had a slot for memory cards so i could breathe a sigh of relief..the photos were ok. The camera still only produced a black screen so we used my step daughters camera for the rest of the trip. I also had my rebel but hers was a lot smaller and more convenient (in hindsight I wish i had used the Rebel). I got some super shots of the kids that I wanted to blow up and frame. Especially one of my 3 year old. All was well until I asked Cerah for her camera Thursday mornign so I could download. She said "the camera is not in my bag." She had pulled it out during our flight home and left it on the plane. I have contactd every lost and found with no luck. I can't believe a person would take a camera with someone esle's memories. Actually, they could have kept the camera (which wasn't an expensive one anyway) but I wish they would have had the decency to return the memory card.

So anyway, I am just devastated at the losss of my vacation photos...even though I know I should be grateful for the half that I do have.

I knew you guys would understand my pain

So a trip report will be coming....

Oh, Kristen, that's just awful! Believe me, I can sympathize and empathize--I still feel like I've been punched in the gut every time I think of the camera I lost on my Grenada trip two years ago. It's not the camera--it's the memories. You're exactly right.

It was a hard lesson to learn, but now everything that travels with me gets our name and contact information on it. And like you with your memory card, we now travel with our laptops and/or additional memory cards so that we can download photos as we go, or at least not keep all photos on the same memory card.

At least you still have half of your photos--feeling so wretched will fade in time, but I know for now that doesn't help. But you'll get plenty of understanding from all of us Fodorites.

Thanks Emily...I was thinking of you after it happened and remembered when you went through it. It's just so sad. I can see all the photos in my head but it's painful to know I can never put them in the kids' photo album. I keep kicking myself for not downloading them or for not double checking that she had he camera etc. Iknow it's pointless but I can't help it. A lady from USAirways called last night and said they had found a camera and I was sooo relieved...but it wasn't ours

Hi Kristen,

This happened to me last summer when we were in Hawaii...my memory card malfunctioned, and I lost all my photos of the Big Island and Kauai. I was crying on my birthday because the photos were so precious to me. I was very lucky that I was able to find a camera shop on Kauai that was able to run a program and recover most of them. But believe me, I know how you feel!

Anyways, I am looking forward to your trip report on GC. We are headed there in December with our baby who will be 4 1/2 months old (he's being born 3 weeks from today), so I can't wait to read your TR!

So sorry for the loss! That's just plain horrible, but I hope the memories of your trip outlast the memories of the evil camera gods!

Looking forward to your trip report anyway. We were recently in Grand Cayman and would love to go back soon Guess you'll have to plan a trip back soon as well to take more photos!

Pictures are very important to me-I feel your pain! -(

My small point and shoot camera now out of the blue, does the same thing, the screen is blank, I can't view any pics. It actually looks "cracked", but it still takes pictures.

Other than the pictures, can you write a trip report? I would love to hear about your adventures.

It still took pics..you just couldn't see what you were shooting! It actually healed itself now though I think.

I started a TR at Charlotte airport during our connection and once Mark gets his compuetr working again (issues, issues) I will finish it up.
