The best travel sites?

I was just wondering what the best sites were to find general information and then buy
some tickets and get a rental car for a family vacation. With all the choices out there I'm just having a hard time decided what site to trust. Anyone have any good or bad experiences?

Ian Sep 14th, 2000 11:57 AM

This may not help you Lisa too much, but I ran across a site a few days ago that lists alot of travel sites, so maybe you can just see which one you like the best by trying them out. The site is kinda ameaturish but it has alot of links to all kinds of travel sites that you would use just for what you're talking about.
Its at www.geocities.com/travellynx.
Try it out.

A very good and reputable site is Travelocity. I've booked with them before.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. I'm new to this on-line vacation buying stuff so any help is appreciated.
I think I would like to stick to the more reputable sites like Travelocity, so thanks Andrea. Also, thanks to Ian for the pretty neat site you directed me to. It had links to a few travel sites I've never even heard of but seemed interesting. I did find a great fare of $480 for a trip from Dallas Tx to London from that site through another website, so we're now looking into a London vacation instead of a caribbean one. I think I'll bookmark that site. Anyway, I could use all the help I can get, so keep 'em coming everyone.

Lisa: Try smarterliving.com or travelscape.com. A popular favorite is also Expedia.com which I've actually booked flights and rentals on. Good luck!

Look in your local large city paper travel section on Sunday and the national newspaper of the USA and write down web sites and check them out. Keep the ones you like and chunk the ones you don't in the roundfile. Try some of the auction sites also.

Travelocity and Expedia are probably the most popular and contain some of the most information. Travelocity is the third largest e-commerce site behind Amazon and Ebay so you can be assured they are safe to use. Of course Expedia is a spinoff from Microsoft - so problem there either. I have personally also used Travelscape and Hotel Reservation Network (@ www.hoteldiscounts.com) for hotel discount rates. Airline Websites are also very good. I've set up complete international vacations through American Airlines Vacations that have just have worked out being perfect. There are thousands of travel sites now and sometimes keeping track of them all is a pain, so I guess the website at geocities.com/travellynx that Ian mentioned makes it a little easier (but will it ever be updated again?). Hope this helps.

Travellynx Sep 25th, 2000 02:39 PM

Hey David- The site was just updated- lol! (Hope the Travel lynx don't get me...)

DON'T USE WWW.TRAVELUNLIMITED.COM ---the ruined my vacation and there certainly was no "service after the sale" from them! As long as they got their money, they could care less. They are a bunch of rude and nasty people, starting with the owner straight to the agents. Use ANY other travel site!

Have used www.travelunlimited.com for about 5 years and have nothing but good things to say. Book at least twice a year with them. They have great rates and great service. Patty sounds like Wayne and his rental car or Sharon L and her dislike of the HI.

I have used Travelocity for everything from rental cars to a cruise. I like to go to gomez.com and check out the travel agent section where they are reviewed and rated. Gomez.com is really helpful for not only travel sites but others as well. I think you'll find alot of information there so you may feel more comfortable choosing a site thats featured or reviewed there. Ian, thank you so much for leading me to the "Travel Lynx" site on geocities- that site is chock full of travel links. I asked them to add a link to one of my favorite travel booking websites on the website and they actually did it. Hope this helps.
