T & C Shopping
Visiting T & Cs for the first time Winter 2011 during a 10 day visit - loved diamond shopping in St. Marten the past couple of trips. Will we find the same here or do we need to plan a day (or 2 day) trip/visit to a nearby island, and if so, which island?

St. Martin has the best shopping in the Caribbean, in my opinion, followed by St. John.
You will not find shopping even close anywhere in T&C, and you really can't day trip to any other close by islands. You would only be able to day trip to Miami, and it would cost around $550 per ticket! You could fly to Nassau on Bahamas air, but would have to spend 2-3 nights. Nassau has some good duty free shops.
T&C has 2 jewelry stores that offer diamonds: Jais, and Royal Jewelers. I find both to have the same type selection and prices as in the States with 1 exception, they do have the blue diamond-which is beautiful and reminds me of the water there. Other than that, the other jewelry stores are in boutiques of the resorts, and are trendy pearl, turquoise coral type jewelry. The Somerset sells this kind from Alisha Shulman, who's jewelry is actually worn by movie stars and is featured in VH1's "Glam God" show-but again, more like colorful chunky costume jewelry, that real shows of a tan. I will post her website so you get the idea.
Just to pre warn you--T&C doesn't have much shopping, so prepare yourself. Grand Turk has a cruise port with shops, requires a flight ($150 pp) and only has Ron John's T-shirts and Pirahna Joes and Margaritaville type shops, and a Royal Jewelers, so again, not worth going just to shop. (More like tacky tourist trinkets.)
T&C is all about the beach-you can get some nice home decor to bring back, but it's lacking in shopping--and lacking in ability to travel to a different island to shop--sorry!

Just so you know-it's pretty difficult to split T&C with St. Martin. It requires connections in Puerto Rico and Miami, with possible overnights.
If shopping is that important to you, you should try Anguilla. That way you can take the 20 minute ferry over to St. Martin to shop.
