T & T Trip Report Part 1

Just back from Trinidad & Tobago.... This board has provided me with a wealth of information so I thought I would share my wealth now!!
I started to type out a day by day account of our trip but it became very lengthy so i will just give a summary of places that we stayed, activities and dining experiences.....
Accomodations......
Sadila House -- Guesthouse in Trinidad. We had a very, basic clean room with a private bath and breakfast was included. There is a shared living room area and kitchen for the 3-4 rooms in the house. It was a very convenient place to stay because it is not far from the airport. Also, just a short walk from the main road where buses and maxi taxis are readily available. Price is very reasonable and owner will provide airport transfers. The owners were very friendly and helpful.

Sandy Point Village -- Hotel in Tobago, Crown Point Area. The hotel is very convenient. We were able to walk the 15 minute walk from the airport since we had backpacks and a fairly light load. Overall, it was decent. Our room was spacious and had a kitchenette. It was fairly clean as well. We had a few issues with the bathroom... tub didn't drain and no hot water but the staff promptly addressed these issues. Other than the bathroom, the place was great. Nice grounds, pools and jacuzzis. They do have a beach area that is nice for sunning but NOT suitable for swimming at all. You can also use the pool at the Sandy Point Beach club nextdoor. The beachfront bar at the beach club makes the BEST pina coladas we have ever had.

Monique's Guesthouse -- Trinidad. This place is situated in the Maraval area. If you like to stay in a place that you can walk to other places, this isn't your best bet. It is possible to walk from the guesthouse. However, there is no shoulder on the windy road where it is located and it could prove quite dangerous. Maxi Taxis are also not as frequent on this road as in other parts but there are many route taxis. The room was spacious. We stayed in the newer building which is much nicer. If you stay there, definitely request a room in that building. The place is clean and maintained well. I think they could stand to purchase new linens and towels for the rooms but that stuff isn't really all that important. The front desk put us in touch with Jose who provided us with tours and airport transfers. He is very flexible and will take you whereever you want to go. His prices are also fairly reasonable.

Dear Marcia -

It would be better for those reading your report to put it all together by posting the second and third parts as an immediate reply to the first part. That way they won't get lost, and it would be more coherent.

It is too long to send all at one time!
Dining and Drinking...
Tobago-
Steak & Lobster Grill - Great ocean front sunset views and good food at this restaurant. It is located at the Sandy Point Village Hotel. Weeknights are a good option for this restaurant as the price is inflated on the weekend.

Crown Point Beach Club -- Leon makes a wicked good rum punch and the views here are also great.

Pelican Reef Restaurant -- Very good food and great atmosphere. Nightly entertainment.
So good that we actually ate here twice!!

Jemma's Seaside -- Awesome treehouse restaurant looking out onto the ocean and little tobago. Very good lunch with large portions. A must do in Tobago.

Blue Crab in Scarborough -- Quaint restaurant perched on top of a hill in downtown Scarborough. Another delicious stop on our trip. We had lunch here. Great food and views.

Sandy Point Beach Club -- Standard Fare but very inexpensive.

Miss Jean's at Store Bay Beach -- Crab & Dumpling is a must have dish while in Tobago. A little hard to eat but delicious!!

Bonker's Restaurant -- Good food and built up quite much. Didn't really have the character that other places did. We thought it was just ok.

Trinidad
Pizza Hut -- Just like everywhere else!

Hassein's Roti Shop at the Promenade -- Delicious rotis. MMMMMM MMMM good.

Author: Marcia ([email protected])
Date: 07/08/2002, 04:35 pm
Message: Here is the rest!!

Activities....
Tobago---
Pidgeon Point Beach -- Beautiful White Beach with calm water. Nice for a day of relaxation. Mainly catering to tourists.

Rent Bikes -- A wonderful way to go exploring. We rode out to Buccoo.

Rent a Car -- Drive all around the Island. we spent a day just exploring and driving through all the villages. It is possible to cover the whole island in a day! Definitely recommend this.

Store Bay Beach -- Locals beach mostly. Not the same white sand as Pidgeon Point but still very nice. Have crab and dumpling for lunch at Miss Jeans. Browse through the shopping stalls set up outside the beach.

Boat Trip to Little Tobago -- Took a glass bottom boat out there with Fear Not. Had a guided 1 hour hike on the island. Then back on the boat to see the reef and fish. Planned to snorkel but the water was way to rough. Be prepared for a rocky boat ride on this side of the island!!

Trinidad----
Shopping in downtown POS - Lots of stores and vendors to be seen. Watch your valuables though.

Botanical Gardens -- They were ok. I think we came at a time when they were not really blooming and seemed to be a little dry.

Zoo -- Small zoo but a wide variety of animals. We enjoyed the birds and monkeys the most.

Savannah -- Nice big park. Good place to visit.

Maracas Beach -- Locals Beach. Powderey Sandy. Nice waves. Has shower facilities. Definitely have the Bake & Shark at Anthony's.

Caroni Bird Sanctuary -- Boat ride through the swamp at dusk and birdwatching. The Scarlet Ibis return here nightly from all over the island and Venezuala. They are beautiful red birds. This is quite a site!!

Any questions... e-mail me direct!

Thanks for posting such an informative report. This is the kind of stuff I like to see on this board. Especially helpful because we don't see too much on T&T here.
