Suggestions for St. Lucia

My husband and I are planning a trip for our 20th Anniversary and after MANY, MANY hours of researching the many different islands. I think the island that fits us best would be St. Lucia. However, now we are trying to decide where to stay, island location? We would like to stay somewhere that is convenient to shopping, grocery store/town. However not interested in all inclusive, since I think our best fit would be renting a place with a small kitchen and do some of our cooking, but of course clean and a safe location and on the beach is top of my list for accommodations. We are both active and would like to see as much as possible, so jeep rental, excursions, best beaches and places to visit while there would be very helpful. Or a day trip to another island would be nice and swimming with turtles would be a plus!

I have to say the best information I have gotten is from this site, so I am confident that I am coming to the right place. So, thanks in advance for your help!

I might be wrong, but St Lucia doesn't seem like a self catering kind of place to me. AI or a hotel that offers some meal plans would be good, alternatively stay close to Rodney Bay for lots of restaurant choices. The beaches in St Lucia range from light to dark sand, depending on what part of the island you stay.

I love St Lucia, but I don't see it as a beach destination. Hiking, mineral baths, relaxing with marvelous views is more the St Lucian way. ;-)

The north has most of the population and the beach resorts. The south has the Pitons and eco-tourism.

I would recommend this place for an authentic jungle tour. We used them while visiting for a day in st. lucia via a cruise ship vacation. They were the best.
