Suggestions for Puerto Rico
I am traveling with my husband and small children to Puerto Rico, Rio Grande; can anyone give me some suggestions of things to do for 10 days in the island?
We are going in November, and we'll stay in Rio Grande the first days, we are open to move to another part of the island to stay there if we need.
Where exactly is the Luminiscent bay? and how can I get there? Any answers greatly appreciated.

Hi Deb, Sorry I can't be of help. I'm looking for info for myself. My husband, 1 year old son, and I are looking for a place to stop over for 4-5 days between Christmas and New Year. Puerto Rico looks attractive because we can get in and out on non-stops to/from Boston and San Francisco. It's been years since I've traveled down there though and i really don't know PR. Can you have a real Carribean experience there? Sounds like a silly question but I'm looking for some good general tourist info and can't find much on the Web. I hope you enjoy your trip! Becca.

Hi -- I suggest the Hyatt Dorado/Hyatt Cerramar about 1/2 hour outside of San Juan. They are sister hotels 1 mile aoart, a shuttle runs between them. The Cerramar is more family-oriented, the Dorado more couples-oriented. The Cerramar has children's activities, a river pool, a great place for kids. We loved it so much we bought a timeshare there so we can take the kids back.

Deb --
I suppose your flexibility depends somewhat on the kids' ages, but we spent a few days on the west coast in the Rincon area last year and really liked it; felt much more representative of the "real" PR than SJ and the North coast.
Rincon is about 2-1/2 relatively easy drive from SJ. We stayed at the Lazy Parrot Inn, a family owned 9 room (or so) which was delightful, clean, very comfortable, and not that expensive for PR. They have a nice pool and garden area, good restaurant, and it's less than a mile from several Atlantic facing beaches. I believe one of the biolumescent bays is not far from this area. Heard it is fascinating, and highly recommended, we just didn't have time to do it.
El Faro lighthouse (I think that's the name) is only about 1-1/2 miles away from the Inn. One day, we drove oceanside roads pretty much all the way from Rincon to Ponce, then returned to Rincon by extremely good highway system.
Suggest you check wheretostay.com hotel/inn reviews for comments on the Lazy Parrot, including mine. Happy to answer specific questions if you write to me directly. good luck.

If you want to have a true Puerto Rican experience, stay away from the big resorts. I suggest staying at the paradores which are much more charming and inexpensive. We have never been disappointed at Villa Parguera, where the Phosphoresscent Bay is located. Take a smaller boat rather that the larger tourist boat, you get a much better look and feel. Try to scedule on a moonless night when the effect is much more dramatic. Hacienda Gripinas up in the mountains is absolutely beatiful and peaceful. Head southwest by car. The roads are modern and safe, you can't go wrong.
