We're thinking about the Sugar MIll in Tortola, but when the Fodor's guide says on a busy road..and small beach, it makes you wonder. Any feedback? Is the road within the resort or is this the main road around the island? Thanks.

I've never stayed at the Sugar Mill but I've had dinner there a few times. The road in front of the hotel is indeed the main road on that side of the island but I wouldn't necessarily call it busy, especially in the off-season. You won't have to wait more than a few seconds to get across it, if you even need to wait at all.

I've never been to the beach in front of the Sugar Mill (I think that might be considered Apple Bay?) because we enjoy Smuggler's Cove and Cane Garden Bay. They are both beautiful beaches. We also like going to Brewer's Bay for decent snorkeling. You didn't say when you plan to travel but I think in the winter Apple Bay gets big enough waves for surfing.

We stayed down the street from the Sugar Mill and agree w/ sharona that the road is not that busy. The hotel is on a very hill in front of a small beach with a little beach bar. It looks nice. Driving by we saw a guy pull a very large lobster out of there one day!

We've stayed at Sebastians on Apple Bay, and you are correct about the waves and the surfing (kinda cool to see a bunch of locals in wetsuits out every morning catching the early waves). Agree that the road isn't too bad, but there isn't a lot of "there" there, and we found ourselves driving over to Cane Garden Bay to spend most of our time.

I stayed at Sugar Mill a few years ago and my experience is as others said. It's a road you need to look both ways before crossing, but it's not a road that is at all intimidating to cross!

The small beach is fine for ending the day, but I personally wouldn't want to spend all day there. We snorkeled there inside the breakwater and it was actually decent, and the breakwater of course makes the water very calm there. The restaurant on the beach is casual and I recall tha the food was pretty good.

There's no shade on that small beach in front of Sugar Mill but they do have loungers available for guests to use. Walking to Long Bay beach is easy, but I would drive to any of the others, including Smuggler's Cove. We loved Brewer's Bay and also Long Bay east on Beef Island, which was good for snorkeling and where we saw turtles and sting rays.
