Sudden trip! Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic?

Hi there - my husband and I suddenly have 5 days free without the kids in early October. We are thinking Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic - advice? We are experienced travelers in our 30s, looking for culture and fun.

Thanks!

We prefer Puerto Rico especially if you are looking for "culture and fun". There is a lot of history to be seen in PR and then there is the rain forest and the phosphorescent bays. Of course there are great beaches and wonderful food as well.
The DR is mostly known for all inclusive resorts which are great if you want to kick back and relax but there is not as much to do off the resort grounds. We have been to all inclusives in the DR and had a good time because we didn't want to have to plan what to do, where to eat, etc....just wanted to relax.

fun! Not sure what area you want to stay in but if it's in the San Juan area, I am happy to answer any questions. I've been going to San Juan just about every year for the past 25 years.

I would make sure to check out Vieques and Culebra for some "off the beaten path" experience - doable as a day trip, but better as an overnighter. Flamenco beach really is pretty damn awesome. For local culture, make sure to check out the Nuyorican cafe. And if you like ziplines, the big one (google it) on PR is the best I've ridden. 2nd longest line in the world. I'm not big on rainforest walks, but there is a good one there. The Radio telescope if cool, if you're into that and food is always interesting if you go local. Diving is OK. Easy vacay because it's all U.S. money and language and even your cellphone will work just fine there.

"...it's all U.S. money and language"

As long as the US language you mean is Spanish! LOL
