Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there is such a thing as a AI in Grand cayman and if there is what are the ones you would stay at or have stayed at? What are the prices like is it a very $$ place to go for vacation? thanks

No, there are no AI resorts in Grand Cayman. There are a couple of places that have a so-called "AI" plan (the Reef Resort springs to mind), but nothing like what you would experience in the DR. Grand Cayman is an expensive island, and most people save by staying in a condo. It doesn't strike me that would appeal to you if you prefer the big, busy atmosphere of an AI resort. And I think you might be floored a the expense of Grand Cayman if you are used to the DR. It is, however, a great place to go for a vacation.

There is also the Marriott and Beach Club Colony. Both sit on 7 Mile Beach, unlike the Reef resort. Beach Club Colony has threatened to close for a while now, but I checked and they are still taking reservations.

They are no AI complexes like you will find in Mexico, DR or Jamaica. They are regular hotels that offer a food and drink plan in their on-site restuarant and bars. We stayed at the Holiday Inn several years ago on their AI plan (no longer there) and we enjoyed it very much. Food was good. Actually better than many of the AI resorts we've been to in Mexico.

Grand Cayman's food and drinks prices are quite high. We paid $60 for 2 hamburgers, one beer and a margarita. DH paid $15.00 for a hamburger and coke. However, we really enjoyed the Island, atmosphere and 7 Mile Beach is just beautiful.

Actually, restaurant food prices are about 25% more than in Manhattan because the Cayman dollar is worth more than the U.S. dollar.

Doug.. totally agree that the OP needs to be sure of what type of vacation they are looking for, but whilst Cayman is not anywhere near as cheap as DR or JA for AI type vacations, it is not as expensive as most major US cities.. last time I was in New York / Vegas / Chicago (those were my last three), I felt like I had to sign the credit card receipt in blood, it was that expensive to eat in a reasonable restaurant :)

I'd also point out that beachfront suites in Cayman from under $150 this summer and killer air fares from Cayman Airways (being copied by many US carriers) make Cayman prices the lowest they have been since I had hair AND it wasn't grey :)

I agree that you can eat at VERY expensive restaurants while in GC. But, believe me, it is not necessary to do so. There are a lot of reasonably priced options, especially if you are willing to walk past the tourist spots and try places where "regular" folks eat. We are on the island several weeks each year, and never break the bank dining out!
