Staying in St. Martin...do we need a car?
We're going to St. martin in December and staying at L'Hoste Hotel. Have never stayed on St. Martin, always traveled through it so don't know if we should be renting a car for all or part of our stay. Any suggestions?

St. Martin is a small island...we rented mopeds, and had a wonderful time looking for unique snorkeling spots (alot of fun). We opted instead of the car, to take a puddle jumper over to St. Bart's....an even smaller French Island with wonderful shops, restuarants and a pink coral sand beach, gorgeous!!

We rented a car when we went to St Martin. There is pretty much everything you could want on an island there, quiet beaches, great restaurants, nightlife, shows, casinos, shopping. BUT... its all over the island.
If you want to focus your vacation on just dining, or shopping, or a beach, you could get away without a car, but to do it all, I would think you'd want one.

I go to SXM often and I agree that you really do need a car to see the whole island. Without a car you have to rely on taxis to get everywhere and that can get expensive.
Car theft can happen over there, as well, so be sure to always lock your doors and don't leave any valuables in the car.
Also, be sure to reserve a vehicle in advance since December is the busiest tourist month on SXM and cars book up fast during that time.
Have fun!
