St. Vincent & the Grenadines

Does anyone have any information regarding the Tamarind Beach Club on Canouan Island? I really want to try something different and it looks great- but I would love to hear from someone who has been there regarding the resort, the beaches, getting there, etc...Thanks!

Built in 1995, Tamarind Beach Club is a somewhat upscale AI on a beautiful beach. I am sure you would enjoy a stay there.

If you really want something different on Canouan, look into the Canouan Beach Club. This is a resort with a mainly French clientele and has a real feel of Europe about it. And great food.

I don't know whether the golf course is still open...it was built to serve the Tamarind and its much glossier partner, Carenage (now closed).

Canouan has beautiful beaches - you won't be disappointed in them. But if you are looking for nightlife and shopping, this is not the place. While there, you should certainly arrange for a day sail to snorkle in the Tobago Cays, about an hour or so away.

You can get to Canouan via American Eagle from San Juan. Also Mustique Air and SVG Air fly there from Barbados.

You can also get there via weekly ferry from St. Vincent (but it's a rough and long journey).

Let me know if you have other questions.

Rosewood Hotels and Resorts terminated its management agreement for Carenage at the end of February. The hotel ceased operations completely in early May. Since then, I have heard nada.

Here's a little detail extracted from a letter sent from Bruce Hearn, the managing director of Carenage to travel agencies last May: "The resort anticipates reopening in 2003 with its facilities and services restored to ultra-luxury five star standards including the completion of the redesigned Championship 18-hole Jim Fazio Golf Course. In view of our termination of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts as the operator of Carenage Bay, we find it imperative to cease operations, re-group, perform necessary maintenance, and reestablish an effective sales and marketing network. We will be taking the resort to a higher level in standard of facilities and services in keeping with the original vision for Carenage Bay. We will miss not having your clients at Carenage Bay, but for your clients who want to return to Canouan or those that want to discover our island for the first time, I would like to recommend our sister resort Tamarind Beach Hotel. It is loaded with Caribbean charm and has a beautiful beachfront location. Many of our star Carenage Bay employees will be reassigned to Tamarind for wonderful warm and friendly service and you can still use some of the Carenage Bay facilities including tennis courts, Godahl Beach water sports. As soon as our plans are finalized, I will be announcing when we will resume accepting reservations for 2003."

Don't hold your breath!
