st.thomas vs st. croix
What is nicer st.thomas or st.croix for future reference. Which has whiter sander, bluer water. Cons and Pros about both!!!

Do you seriously think either of them is going to be anywhere near the same after Irma? This post seems very insensitive at the moment.

It may be insensitive, and hard to imagine, but some people may not even be aware of current weather events. If docks and airports are usable, tourists will bring money that is desperately needed for rebuilding. I suggest people also look for "working" vacations where they can do something to help local people without being a burden.

I haven't seen much on damage to large hotels like the Ritz Carlton or the Marriott. Did they suffer significant damage too? |
btw - I have a feeling the OP isn't even aware that the Virgin Islands just got hit with a major hurricane.

From the pictures I've seen, both STT and St John got pounded pretty good....a lot of damage. It looks as if just restoring power is going to take a while let alone clearing roads, and rebuilding the structures. I have not seen reports for the bigger hotels on STT yet. Either way, it will be quite a while to recover for this area. My thoughts and prayers are with the folks living this nightmare down there.

The Buccaneer Resort on St Croix has posted that they housed evacuees, and are now getting back into business. They did not suffer any significant damage. It's a great place.

From what I can tell, most of the damage was done to wood-frame structures built prior to hurricanes Hugo and Marilyn. Most buildings since then, are cement/rebar and did amazingly well in the Cat 5. storm. It will take a while, but St Thomas and St John will recover.

The Buccaneer Hotel Hello from St. Croix! We are all safe and sound at The Buccaneer. The property fared well during the storm with minimal damage to infrastructure. At this time, the hotel is being used for relief personnel until the end of October so we can help our island rebuild. We are encouraging guests who are scheduled to arrive before November to reschedule or cancel their trip with no hotel penalty. Guests who wish to still come to the hotel should expect to see storm shutters still in place as we do not plan to take them down. We are serving food out of the Brass Parrot room buffet style and our scheduled Grotto restaurant and pool renovations will continue. Many of the local vendors will be closed as well as they clean up their respective businesses to open for season. Once we are able to restore our hotel and St. Croix back to normal, than we will resume our efforts to support our neighboring islands. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to welcoming you later this year! STT, STX and STJ all have beautiful caribbean blue water (currently with sewage runoff and toxic leaks from sunken boats), white sandy beaches and DEVESTATED infrastructure at the moment.
These islands need some time to clean up, rebuild and find some normalcy before they can entertain the notion of tourists again. :( |

I for one saw how Turks and Caicos was “devastated” by both hurricanes in the media. Just got back and Grace Bay is already back in business. You can’t even tell in the main hub that storms even went through. And yet media is saying how bad everything is Unless you have a first hand account specific to an island, the media sensationalized quite a bit. The water already looks clear and blue. Areas did fine |
We have relatives on St Thomas. Devastated is not too strong a word. Both St Thomas and St John will need several months, minimum, before they are really able to handle tourists. They are working with the cruiselines to start by getting the main town up and running and the Magens Bay beach back to being able to handle cruise ship visitors. It will be a long road back.
