I went to St. Thomas in September. Had a blast. Snorkeling was best on coki beach. There is an underwater aquarium there and they feed the fish right by the beach. So you have a great opportunity to see alot of different species. The water was very calm and clear.

We love both Grand Cayman and St. John--St. Thomas is way too touristy--we went to St. Thomas twice but after visiting St. John for the day, St. Thomas lost out!

In Grand Cayman, one of our favorite places to stay is LaCovia Condominiums--they are very centrally located right next to the Hyatt. The beach is beautiful and wide. The condominiums are older but very well maintained and the staff is great. Many of the units open directly on the beach--you can take three steps out the door and you're on the beach. We've been there several years over Thanksgiving with lots of family--ate in for breakfast and lunch and some dinners. LaCovia has grills just outside the units and are within walking distance to some very nice restaurants. Our kids are divers so we weren't into snorkeling too much. The down side to GC is the exchange rate--it's like having a 20% surcharge on everything you buy.

St. John is more isolated but definitely worth the trip. We stay at the Westin in one of the villas. Their beach is not good for snorkeling but the resort is excellent. The beaches that are good for snorkeling on St. John are easily reached via taxi or car. We ate breakfast in and lunch some days--there is a very nice beach bar restaurant at the Westin--also lots of good restaurants in Cruz Bay--and the dollar is the American dollar. If you've never been, St. John is definitely worth the trip.

I have to disagree with Doug from Fodor's about snorkeling off of 7 Mile Beach. We're heading for what I believe is our 10th trip to Cayman next month. If you stay on the north end of 7 Mile there is decent snorkeling just off shore in the area near the Cemetery, hence the name of the reef. We have also seen folks snorkeling near downtown (just north of the cruiseport) and are going to try that this time. I've done Rum Point once but was very disappointed in the snorkeling----not much to see IMHO and the place was crawling with cruise ship passengers.

I've been to STT but Cayman wins hands down!!!! People are nicer IMHO, restaurants are better and 7MB is still my favorite in all the Caribbean!
