St. Thomas Restaurants

Will visit there the first time in July. We enjoy memorable restaurants with fantastic settings & gourmet food. Can anyone help me find these in St. Thomas. We also enjoy local good food at moderate prices. Any recommendations here too would be appreciated. We like unique things and don't want to waste our time with very Americanized restaurants we can find at home. Thanks.

Good Heavens, do a search!

I prefer getting recommendations and then I can look into specific restaurants. When you are new to a location and read the write ups they all sound interesting -- lots of times they just have good write-ups & the restaurants leave a lot to be desired. With how costly food is in most islands, it's nice having personal recommendations. I do that for others with islands I'm familiar with, so I didn't think I was asking too much.

Dear Louis, Nicely stated. My family and I own a condo in St. Thomas so I am learning more and more about special places to go and eat. You may want to try Romanos--it is on the northeastern end of the island. You will love the Agave Terrace-- wonderful caribbean flair and beautiful views. You will also enjoy the toad and tart. I just returned from St. John. We had a great lunch today at the Inn at Blackbeard's Castle - tables overlook the Charlotte Amalie harbor (excellent view) food, drinks and service were all great. I've also heard good things about the Mafolie Restaurant & Hotel 1829.

sorry to disappoint but 1829 dining room has been closed for several years. Herve is nearby and excellent. Inn at Blackbeards and in French Town Alexander's is great. Craig and Sally's in French Town has one of the islands best wine lists. Duffy's is supposed to open a new spot there too but more dining rather than the Love Shak atmosphere. Agave is hit or miss lately. Blue Moon Cafe at Secret Harbour. Mafolie just reopened and had one great meal there so far. Room with a View in Bluebeard's. Romano's in Smith Bay. Randy's at Rahphune Hill although neither are fabulous settings. Wouldn't call Toad and Tart gourmet but certainly good pub dining. Off the Hook in Red Hook is on the water and Raffles in Compass Point is excellent. Haven't tried Roberts yet but a friend did and thought it was good. Old Stone Farm House is another good one. Restaurants do change frequently so you might want to wait until closer to the time of your trip and not sure what you call moderate. Many of the above have websites if you do a search and it is not unrealistic to go to St. John for dinner. Stone Terrace, Chateau Bordeau at sunset, ZoZo's and if you like more fusion cusine, Asolare.

Asolare on STJ has been dunned a lot lately although I understand that the owners have removed THAT chef and replaced him (they own three restaurants on STJ) so that probably is a good place to go to. However, insofar as St. Thomas is concerned (and this IS what you asked about), "Raffles" has just re-opened as "Patrick's". Patrick has been the chef at Raffles through the original ownership and the lately-demised ownership and now with a partner has the place under his name. Fabulous food, a delightful atmosphere and more to come. I was just there a week ago and have always had the utmost faith in Patrick for a grand gourmet dinner at a reasonable price. Now he has the place, he'll continue to be a supreme contender for best chef accolades! Old Stone Farmhouse is excellent too. Honestly, best bets are with owner-operated restaurants which is why I happen to like Toad and Tart very much. Unique atmosphere, very friendly (just the owner/operator/chef and a bartender/waitperson) and it all works. She's never claimed to be a "chef" but she creates some incredible food that beats a lot of gourmet dining I've had in many places in many years. If you go to www.usvi-on-line.com you'll find that their restaurant rating forum can be helpful. Agree that Agave Terrace goes up and down. The chefs change like the wind and consistency is a major problem. And island restaurants, unfortunately but sometimes fortunately, come and go. Keep looking through all the reviews and get a list going of restaurants you might want to visit. Then, right before your visit, check again and using some of the pointers. Good luck.
