St. Thomas or St. Martin? pls help me make up my mind r/o

Decided we really need a vacation and one of my oldest dreams is to spend New Year's midnight on a beach, wearing a sarong and flip-flops and having a champagne glass with my sweet DH. Doable or not, we'll see. :)
So, it's pretty last minute - I'd have to choose between Antilles Resort at Sapphire Village in St. Thomas or Hotel Beach Plaza in St. Martin.
We've never been south of Cancun - but read the boards for a while now and I understand the charm that each island has. I'd do St. Thomas in a heart beat if the hotel was on the beach.
I trust the fate of my vacation in you, please help as soon as possible as I have to book in a hurry. And thank you in advance.

both are nice islands. I live on st maarten though so I am prejudiced.
do you have airfare yet? check on where you can get the best airfare to.
maybe that will help you make up your mind.
Hotel Beach Plaza in st martin is on the French side. It is a very nice hotel.
if what you want most is to hang at new year's eve on a beach, you can do that on either island...

Thank you, Barbara. It seems that the travel gods have decided for me - apparently Hotel Beach Plaza was sold out. I tried to do the airfare separately but it was too expensive, so I booked a package with expedia (I tried other options as well but this was ultimately the most reasonable).
I'm sure that one day I'll vacation in St. Maarten, as I said before, it sounds equally attractive to me.

If it makes you feel any better, Sapphire Village is very, very close to the beach - a short stroll, though a bit uphill on the way back.

Also, Sapphire Beach is arguably the best beach on St. Thomas with a hotel (you can't stay at Magens or Coki). There's decent snorkeling right there.

I'll wager there will be a pretty good New Year's Eve party at Sapphire Beach Resort, down the hill from your condo.
Hopefully they still have their famous Sunday afternoon barbecue as well.

Enjoy!

Actually, it does make me feel better. Thank you!
I heard that some of the rooms are more run down than others, I just keep my fingers crossed that we get a nice one.

And if you feel really adventurous, you can catch a ferry to Jost Van Dyke to Foxy's Old Years Party. (It's on a beach.)Rated as one of the top 5 in the world behind Time Square and First Night in Paris!
