St. Thomas or St. John?

I?m trying to decide between St. Thomas and St. John. We were looking into the Wyndham Sugar Bay resort, but I?m a little nervous about staying there by the comments I was reading. I?m looking for somewhere I can lie by the beach, snorkel, drink & swim for a reasonable price. Any suggestions would be great!

Hi There,

Affordable beachfront resorts on decent beaches would include Morningstar, Secret Harbour, Sapphire, Bolongo, among others. Each has its positives and negatives. My personal favorite is Secret Harbour. It has a beautiful, smaller, quiet beach with really good snorkeling, very calm water, a great restaurant onsite and large, well appointed rooms.

We spent 5 days in St. John at the Westin and 2 in St Thomas at Secret Harbour. If you want all that you listed--including reasonable price--I say go with Secret Harbour. Westin is nice, but not what I would call "reasonable". At Secret Harbour you can snorkel, swim, drink on site. There's a bar just up from the deck from the beach. Large kitchens, dining, living room, balcony, etc. Plus, it's not too far from the Red Hook Ferry by way of taxi, so you could still take the ferry conveniently to St. John for a day trip. I don't know much about any other places, since this was only my first trip to both islands. They are both beautiful!

The St. Thomas vs. St. John debate depends on whether you desire a more secluded island or something more cosmopolitan. We were at Wyndham Sugar Bay in February and loved the leisure of the resort, although the beach area is not huge. Great accommodations and a staff that was dedicated to their jobs. The bartender in the nightclub always made sure I got a lemon in my Orange Blossom and would give me a cup of green olives just to munch on because he knew I liked them. The city of Charlotte Amalie wasn't the greatest in our opinion. Way too crowded with the cruise ships and it remained that way the entire week. All in all, however, we found the people to be very thoughtful on the island and it was a destination unlike any other island we've ever been to. Very delightful, very memorable. So, wherever you choose, you will find the USVI to be an unforgettable place.

They are very different island. If you go to St John I'd rent a villa rather than the Westin - you get so much more for pretty much the same price.

Basically, if you want the pampering of a resort, shopping, active nightlife, lots of people - go to St Thomas. If you want great snorkeling, laid back pace, secluded beaches, and a spacious villa - go to St John. St John was the obvious choice for us - more of an adventure (personally spending a week on St John made St Thomas look like a tourist trap).

The VI's are expensive for food as far as I am concerned. Aruba is more reasonable. Great beaches and snorkeling as well. Good luck with your decision. Cheers,Larry
