St Thomas Hotel Recommendations

Our family of 4 will be in St Thomas for a couple of nights this August prior to our vacation on Virgin Gorda. We would like a nice hotel reasonably close to the ferry terminal in Charlotte Amalie.Does Frenchman's reef fit the bill, or are there other, nicer resorts which will not cost a fortune in cab rides??

Looking for something that has nice amenities and won't cost a fortune in cab rides if we decide to venture out to some of the attractions on the island.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone!

I really like Marriott Frenchman's Reef/Morningstar and definitely prefer Morningstar. I have been there about ten times, the last time this past November and I am booked again for April. The things that I like about it are as follows: Morningstar has only 5 or six buildings only two or three stories high and is directly on a lovely beach and gives a real islandy feel: It is relatively close to shopping and other activities without being a part of their hustle/bustle Water taxi to shopping in Charlotte Amalie is inexpensive and a lovey scenic trip. Havana Blue, located directly on the beach, is an outstanding restaurant for fine dining and is currently opening the Sandbar for cocktails and is located on the beach as well. Other restaurants there that I have enjoyed are Coco Joes also on the beach, and at Frenchman's Reef, Sunset Grill, great lunch with a dynamite view and Windows on the Harbor. Guests at both hotels may use all facilities. The rooms are nice and the staff is nice and helpful. Hope this helps,

agree if you want to stay near charlotte amalie frenchman's would be great.
if it's possible for you to ferry from red hook to vg look at www.secretharbourvi.com wonderful beach with excellent off beach snorkeling, good restaurant - blue moon cafe, small but fun beach bar. huge condo style rooms.
i think you'll need to rent or taxi to see stuff no matter where you stay.
have a super time on vg. so far i've only stopped by but want to go badly for a couple weeks...where will you stay?
