St. Thomas -- Help, plz!

I have never been to St. Thomas, and I am having a hard time finding our which parts of the island are good and from which I should stay away.

Could anyone tell me if renting a private home at the tip of the North End (20 min from Magen?s Bay) is a good idea...

I am just afraid to make a $2000 mistake.

Thanks so much.

any reason for renting a home?
I know the Mahogeny Run area is nice as is the area around Frenchman's Reef /Morningstar Beach area...

Well, I did not want to stay in a hotel - I wanted some privacy and a private pool. Someone suggested to rent a home/villa. Seems like a good option. It has a kitchen, this way, you dont have to worry about finding a place to eat all the time.

We found a nice place in the Red Hook (East End). Is it a nice area?

thanks!

Your question is difficult to answer because there are less-than-wonderful neighborhoods scattered around different parts of the island.

The East End is generally nice but I have seen seedy areas there also.

I would suggest that you go to the usvi-on-line bulletin board and try to be as specific as you can regarding your proposed location. There are locals on that board who can help.

Hi there, we live in Minnesota and have a condo that we own on the quiet northeastern end of St. Thomas. We are about 8 miles from Red Hook, and you won't be dissapointed visiting. Since we cannot afford to own a place on St. John, when we vacation we rent a car and take the car ferry $ 37.00 over to the island for the day and go beach hopping. We have the best of both worlds. Let me know if you want more information you can email me. P.s. I am not trying to rent our place only letting people know that we truly know the island.
Take care
Lisa

Lisa, thank you for your response.

Sure! I would love any info you could share with me. I just booked a villa somewhere in or near Red Hook. The agent said that the place was a 3 minute ride from the Secret Harbor Beach.

I was just wondering if this was a safe area and good area, overall. Any comments/thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Lisa, I also had another question for you but I will wait for you to respond.

Not sure if you remember to take a look at my message...

Thanks,
OK

If it's 3 minutes from Secret Harbour, means it should be in a good area. Nearby is The Ritz Carlton, as well as Elysian Beach Resort, and the Yacht Club. You would enjoy the beach at Secret Harbour and it's restaurant Blue Moon, and you are minutes from the ferries to St. John and Red Hook happenings. BTW, the barge rate to SJ is $35, but be sure you travel back on the same company or your ticket won't be valid.
