St. Thomas Car Rental
 

My wife and I are traveling to St. Thomas the first of March 09 to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. Staying at Frenchman's Reef. Saw much discussion on the subject of car rental but am concerned about driving on the opposite side of the road. Should I be concerned. Would also appreciate hearing about some "must do's" spots on St. Johns or St. Thomas.

Coral World/Coki Beach
Note: Theses are better when cruise ships are not in port

If time permits, you may also book a trip to the British Virgin Islands (passport required).

I am going to St. Thomas in October and staying at Frenchman's Reef as well. I never considered renting a car until reading opinions on Fodors. We are a family of four and it seems with all the ferry services we may be taking (the Reefer, going to St. John's, Megan's Bay, etc.), it might be worth it to rent a car.

For 5 days, the cheapest rental so far was Thrify ($175).

I would definitely rent a car for at least some of the time of your stay. Both St. Thomas and St. John are relatively small islands but it is so much easier and you'll have much more convenience to see and do more. The taxis are expensive and the public transportation can be a pain in the neck and necessitate long waits. The left-hand driving does take some getting used to, but you shouldn't drive faster than 20-25 mph anyway so it's not that bad. I find the most challenging aspect for new drivers is actually getting used to the very hilly terrain and twisty switchbacks. There are some roads where you are actually at a 45 degree angle or worse! I would just go as slowly as you feel comfortable. If you do go to St. John, make sure you see more than just Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay.
